I don't know why but if you asked me what I thought about Marquis Daniels on the Celtics before the signing I would have just said, "hes ok", but now that he's on the Celtics, I feel like he's the final piece we need to win a title. I don't know why though...

People, you realize PP is 6'6 as well right?  Daniels can play the backup 3.  If you're looking for that really long or multi-talented wing that can play on the wing and play the 4 spot, those are a dime a dozen.(Posey, Odom, Lewis, Diaw, Jamison, Al Harrington, Josh Smith, Marvin Williams, AK47) If you noticed most of those players start, and have big paychecks for the most part.  Those guys are really rare and aren't just running around like the 6'3-6'6 guys are.  Would I love to have a long win player backing up Pierce, yes, but do I see us finding a quality one that would come cheap and willing to only play a bench role..no.

I'm really happy we got someone though, that at least is 6'5+ in Daniels, as TA, Giddens, and Walker are no bigger than 6'4.

Also he is not a restricted free agent, Indiana did not pick up his option, so he is free to go whereever he wants and sign whenever he wants.   http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=4294765

It's lack of strength, not height, that worries me about sticking Marquis at the 3.  Paul Pierce is very strong, so he can bang with the LeBrons and Melos of the league as well as anybody can.  I admittedly don't know too much about Daniels in terms of strength, but the fact that he's a 6'6" PG/SG (as opposed to SG/SF), combined with the fact that Hollinger has him listed as a soft defender, suggests that he can be pushed around pretty easily.

Do you know what the phrase "a dime a dozen" means?  You called the 3/4 players in the league a dime a dozen, and then went on to say how rare they are.  "A dime a dozen" means that they are easily obtained at a cheap price, as in "you can buy a dozen of them for a dime".

And just to nitpick, Bill Walker is closer to 6'6" than 6'4".  He's plenty big enough to play the SF spot.

Dime a dozen..you got me there. :-\ Meant to say few and far between, one in a million, whatever, it was late here. As far as the strength issue, reading the draftexpressprofile of him from years back says "Has everything you look for in an NBA wing physically: height, strength, and foot speed."  So I doubt those things have changed, but you never know.  http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Marquis-Daniels-2134/

As far as the Bill Walker height thing, he may be 6'5, but he's not 6'6.  There's a pic of him and Beasley standing almost side by side and he looks to be 3 inches shorter.  So if Beasley is 6'8 in shoes, then I guess you're right..hes closer to 6'6 than 6'4.   :-*

I think we're looking at size a little too much. He has the ability to play SG as well which would help, especially if we ever want to go with a small bench and have Eddie as PG. I like the move. Look, we could have waited longer and have all the remaining wings dry up. At least now we know Danny is actually working instead of waiting for the BBD situation to play out.

My main concern with Daniels however is his health. Daniels averaged 20 DNP's per year in the regular season, including 28 last year.

We have to admit though, we filled our biggest hole and got very good value for the LLE. And at the end of the day, I'd take Daniels over TA.

Marquis Daniels primarily played the 3 with Indiana last season, and was a competent defender.  I'm not sure what the problem is.

Yup, a good player to have at an LLE contract.

Of course some people still freak out that Tony got the contract he did.

I would still like to see the sign and trade work out so that we can keep the biannual exception AND the LLE to pick up some bench security (tyronn lue is a realistic example...we keep hearing his name). i'd like to see us nab a 5th big for security behind Baby when he gets back (assuming that what Danny has said about expecting baby to be back in boston is true).

Just to be clear, the LLE = the biannual exception.  They're the same thing, meaning you only get to use it once.

here is the deal...if they can get him without having to move anyone i will be very happy. that is because they still have both those expiring contracts, although i think keeping scal around is a good idea.

then they would be able to package tony, giddens or walker and maybe pruitt for one more piece i.e another decent big or PG.

and a question for Roy...if daniels is a free agent-unrestricted- why do we have to do a sign and trade?

Oh dang, seriously? I've been under the impression that they were two different things this whole time haha. Thanks for clearing that up roy! Either way, it would leave us some flexibility for another FA...

Yeah a sign and trade wouldn't be bad at all, though it'd raise the price for Daniels.

I think I'd rather have him cheap for two years, but either way works for me.

ESPN just talked about this, it must be true.

They only said that we agreed on a deal for the 1.9 LLE, they didn't mention anything about the sign and trade possibilities.

That's great.  I like this signing if it is for $2M/yr, as opposed to if it were ~$3.5M/yr (ie: if Scal were involved).

Plus, I like the idea of keeping Scal.
Celtics fan for life.

This is true as well...those expirings will be worth much more at the trade deadline this year than they would be any other year, thanks to the economy's effect on suffering franchises. my dream scenario is still to get the toughness of Nocioni from the Kings for Tony Scal and Giddens or Walker. I don't know what will happen, buy Danny will do the right thing I'm sure.

the best thing for boston is to get daniels on the pacers letting him walk. that keeps in place walker, pruitt, tony, scal, giddens who all can be dealt for more bigs or a point. the key now is davis. he is either going to resign or boston is going to sign and trade him. i certainly don't think boston is going to let him walk out the door for nothing

Why is this great? Don't you want to ship out some dead weight and sign better players for the LLE/minimum? It would be better to sign-and-trade Daniels where he gets $10M for 3 years and sending out Tony Allen and Giddens/Walker? We wouldn't have the backup wing debate next year again.

I'd rather have him cheap for two years and still have contracts to trade later in the year.
