Here is the problem with making the trade just to make sure you "get something"

You can't just let what you get go later.  You have to "get something" for that as well.

And in the NBA, that leads to a downward spiral of actual talent with out a corresponding downward spiral of actual money being spent.

I just talked to my inside source and here's the latest version of the deal:

To LA: KG + Doc + Rondo + Pierce + Sullinger
To BOS: Autographed 8x10 of Elgin Baylor

Clippers are supposedly insistent on trading a non-autographed 4x6 of Baylor instead.

This is very true... where does it end?  Sometimes you have to walk away.

Beyond the fact that there is a whole mess of time left to make any sort of deal and we actually have the leverage, contrary to some of the narrative put forth by media.

I don't get that part either.

"this will be the only chance the Celtics get to trade KG"

If the Celtics season isn't going well, he will likely be willing to waive his no trade clause.

If the Celtics season is going well, awesome.

GET THE DEAL DONE DANNY! FIND A WAY TO GET BLEDSOE TOO! Figure out what to do with C-Lee/Terry later.

Complete for another half-a**ed season and let our players retire / our coach walk for nothing return - or - shave a few years off of the rebuilding process and potentially trade for a high pick in the 2014 draft?

It's a no-brainer at this point. Stop being nostalgic people, and stop blaming KG and/or Doc. This is Danny's doing.

GOGOGO

Not likely.

I heard that 4 balcony tickets were the hold up. Apparently Sterling wants Ainge to pick up the service fee

Exactly.  I think too many people are treating this like MLB or the NFL.  In baseball, teams always trade aging stars for prospects--which works out not only for acquiring young talent, but also for dumping salary since minor league deals don't usually effect payrolls very much.  In the NFL, you always have the option of cutting a player.

The issue with any trade the Celtics make is that Danny needs to weigh the prospect of Jordan (and other players' salaries) and the talent they bring vs. how that money could be spent otherwise.

So as wdleehi says, something is not always better than nothing in the NBA.

Something is not always better, but this particular something is. There are so many teams under the cap right now that could absorb Jordan in a trade. That would allow the C's to get all that cap relief and likely a prospect. So it is more about the trade ability of what you are acquiring more than anything else.

With a team that stands at $73 million payroll in the observable future, nothing is quite distinctly worse than something.

Not sure why people are so concerned with immediate cap space. If I'm not mistaken, Danny wont have cap space to play with for likely at least a year or two.

Jordan likely wont be flipped right away but I could see the value in a 26 year old athletic center on an expiring $12mill deal next year.

I mean, Washington got Nene for McGee and Jordan has to be at least as good as McGee.

Yeah its not like we have cap room of any note even if KG does retire.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nba--sources--kevin-garnett--doc-rivers-trade-may-come-down-to-clippers-surrendering-two-first-round-draft-picks-to-celtics-030159443.html

So now according to Woj Danny has backed off of his demand they take Terry or Lee and instead is pushing for 2 firsts in addition to Jordan.

NO. Just no. That is a terrible return. People were talking about getting at least 1 first for Doc alone, so the rest of the deal would be DJ and a first for KG? Thats highway robbery.

The salary cap flexibility we could get by moving one or two of Terry/Lee/Bass would be far more useful for us as a club going down the line than a late first rounder in the 20-30 range.

I'd rather have the first-round pick than dumping Terry or Lee.  I want there to be some second-round picks thrown in, as well.  Jordan, two firsts, and two seconds sounds reasonable to me for what has a good chance of being a one-year rental.

I prefer an extra first rounder to dumping Terry/Lee as well.
