It's a very interesting deal if it goes down.

Houston gets a legit PF and frees up money to go after Nene at C. Lowry, Courtney Lee, and a boatload of young talented forwards to round out the roster.

NO loses a franchise point guard, but gets a terrific SG in Martin, with Odom and Scola at the forward slots next to Okafor. They'd need to do something at PG, and perhaps figure out a way to jettison Ariza (or turn Odom into a 6th man?).

Wow - if this trade is true, then I am shocked.

LA basically ran their offense through Pau - he was in many respects LA's "KG", without the screaming of course.

I was sure that Kobe wasn't too keen on running their offense through Bynum, either...he basically stated one time that "I'm option 1, and Gasol is option 2...Bynum is after that" or something to that effect.

If someone else can find the exact quote pls post it.

I'm betting that if this is true Kobe didn't sign off on letting his number 2 go.

He may be getting CP3, but a backcourt of CP3 and Kobe and a frontcourt of Bynum is NOT getting through MEM, OKC or DAL.

And say goodbye to your 6th man. I say LA move Ron Ron to the bench and let him take that role ;D.
Don't forget GF, there's no Phil Jackson or triangle offense there anymore so Pau's presence in the half court would have been in decline anyway. With Chris Paul there and Mike Brown coaching, the offense will be more conventional and originating through the PG position.

Odom was 6th man for the lakers already... he'll just be what he was.
It takes me 3hrs to get to Miami and 1hr to get to Orlando... but I *SPIT* on their NBA teams! "Bless God and bless the (Celts)"-Lady GaGa (she said gays but she really meant Celts)

What exactly is the trade?

Paul to LA
Gasol and Odom to NO
Gasol rerouted from NO to Houston for Kevin Martin, Luis Scola and Goran Dragic

So NO trades Paul for Odom, Martin, Scola, and Dragic. But they would need to relinquish rights to David West to do it.

How do the Lakers give up 28 million and take back only 16?

I wonder Okafur or Ariza is included.

Good point, about Mike Brown.

I'm still shocked that they parted with Pau and Odom, though. I suppose they really believe that Bynum's going to shoulder the heavy lifting up front.

We'll see. I have a feeling that OKC and MEM are licking their chops.

Reacquiring Trevor Ariza would be great for LA.

Well, maybe not, Ariza would still be stuck playing with Chris Paul. Nevermind.

I think if the cap hold for West is removed, the numbers still work for NO. They should have around $44 million in committed salaries without West's hold, so they could take on the extra salary.

It would make more sense for NO if they could unload more salary in the deal. Then they could keep West's rights, and potentially sign and trade him for pieces.

Also, I haven't broken down the Houston player salaries. Do they combine to make less than Pau?

Well, this all may be a blessing in disguise.

No matter how it looks on paper - the games still have to be played.

I don't think the NBA has the power to give LA the banner on looks alone.

The Banner won't be given away until June 2012. The games must be played.

http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/217173/Report_Lakers_To_Acquire_Chris_Paul

"The Lakers are close to acquiring Chris Paul from the Hornets while giving up Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom, according to a source.

The Rockets will also be involved, with Kevin Martin, Luis Scola and Goran Dragic going to the Hornets.

Gasol will go to Houston.

New Orleans is telling other teams that Paul will be dealt to the Lakers.

The Celtics, Warriors and Clippers were the other primary teams involved in trade talks with the Hornets for Paul."

that was fun while it lasted guys.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Do we need a 345874359867495867456th thread about this?
