Here is an additional piece of information not mentioned here yet:  The Lakers gain TWO trade exceptions in this deal.

They gain a trade exception for the difference in salary between Gasol and CP3 (about $2.5 million) and another exception for Odom's salary ($8.9 million).

They are trading away about $27 million and acquiring only $16 million, so they get $11 million in trade exceptions.

That $8.9 million trade exception can be used to acquire a very good starting power forward.

Daryl Morey and Dell Demps also get free access to all the vacation properties owned by the Buss family. Free massages, gourmet dinners, the best wines etc are part of the package. They will also get their own star in Hollywood walk of fame.

Hornet Fans not happy either, said they would have rather had Rondo...

I wouldn't be happy in their place either. They traded Chris Paul to become a mediocre team for a couple of years. How long it will take them till they get a player of Rondo's quality in the draft?

How does this trade make sense for NO?

NO was saying they wanted (1) a young impact player (2) high draft pick(s) (3) a rotation player or 2.

Scola is 31 and a decent rotation guy.
Kevin Martin is 28, a decent spot up shooter but bad injury history.
Dragic is a backup point guard.
Odom is 32 and a decent rotation guy at best.

The Knicks pick this year will probably be around 20th.

Why would they ever do this deal?  Because the league owns the team and wants Paul/Howard in LA.

This is crazy: Hearing the NBA (owner of New Orleans) vetoed the CP3 trade because it wasn't in the best interests in the league.

Simmons probably called up his buddy in Houston in a fit of rage.

lol.  This isnt true at all.  If you really read through their forum, you'll find people WERE NOT liking the Celtics package.  They said Rondo didnt have any offensive game, was an overrated defender, and that Green didnt even have a real position.  The NO fans wanted the Laker trade, cuz they saw Dragic as a potential starting PG, Kevin Martin as a necessary scorer, and scola and Odom giving them size.  Additionally, they liked the picks theyd be getting.  Basically, in their eyes, it was 4 useful player and 2 picks versus our 2 semi useful players and 2 picks

Interesting stuff, thanks for sharing that.

It wasn't that bad of a team. It had some nice balance and depth to it.

PG - Goran Dragic, Jarret Jack
SG - Kevin Martin, Jarrett Jack
SF - Trevor Ariza, Quincy Pondexter
PF - Luis Scola, Lamar Odom
C  - Emeka Okafor, Lamar Odom

I think that would have been a better squad than last year's Hornets.

I really liked how Kevin Martin and Trevor Ariza complemented one another last season. Admirer of Dragic, I think he'd do well with the opportunity and give them good minutes (regardless of whether he starts or backs up Jack). The Odom, Scola and Okafor is one of the better big man rotations in the league.

Needs a little more depth on the wing, but yeah, I like it (short term, not long term).

Long term = I still Rondo was their best option

It'll still go through... or the NBA will prevent CP3 from being traded until the Hornets are sold... in which case the Lakers will just go all-in for Dwight and we'll still be peepeed

I never thought it would happen, but it makes sense that it COULD.  Considering each non Laker owner is also a part owner of the Hornets, then any deal that they think will end up costing all of them $ (the formation of a Laker super team), could be voted against.  I just never thought they'd actually do it because it could set a bad precedent (who gets to choose what deal is good versus bad).

Either way, I feel like everyone pretty much showed their cards....CP is headed out West in the hopes of landing in LA.  Bostons current "assets" arent nearly as attractive as we think they are, and any team that thinks they have a shot at Dwight is willing to trade away their whole team to get him.
