Here's an interesting stat line for a third year player picked 6th in the draft. We'll call him mystery player #1: 16.9 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 2.3 apg, 1.1 spg on 43% shooting.
Here's the stat line for third year player Rudy Gay, drafted 8th in the draft: 18.9 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 1.7 apg, 1.2 spg on 45% shooting.
Who was mystery player #1? None other than our own Ron Mercer and the stats were for his first season after we traded him where he split time in Denver and Orlando. Where is he today? Nowhere.
I'm not saying that Gay is destined for the same future; however, let's also not assume that good stats on bad teams are going to translate to superstardom. If that was the case, Ron Mercer would still be in the league.
