There games are close as Scal and Gay's games.

scal is a better defender and 3pt shooter than gay

Good point and Conley is a better wide open shooter than Rondo.

Again, I'd be very skeptical of what Gay and Conley have done on a horrific Memphis team.  As Celtics fans through the '90s and much of the past decade, we should know more than most that great stats on bad teams don't mean a whole lot.

Please hold the rationalizing with regards to Conley ever being as good as Rondo.  Just be happy he can make a wide open jumper.  There games are close as Scal and Gay's games.
Except because Conley is younger as he gets older the gap between him and Rondo might shrink. Where Gay is only going to widen the gap on Scal.

You still are either really talented or your not and Conley has never been really talented but, he's a capable wide open shooter.

Of course Conley has talent.

Just look at this year as the months go by.

His shooting goes up, his TOs go down and his assist stay pretty constant around 5-6 per game.

This rumor doesn't make any sense, in my mind.

(1) The Cs lose financial flexibility, which I assume would be a major reason for considering trading Rondo (flexibility is lost because Gay is due an extension next year, just like Rondo).

(2) Cs get an upgrade in bench help in Gay, but a downgrade at point in Conley.  Yes yes, I've seen the stats, but Conley has proven nothing in the league, whereas Rondo has proven he can effectively start on a championship team (at the very least he has proven that...).

(3) Huge risk for the Cs, given that the Big Three still have a window, but might not be as effective 2-3 years from now when Conley and Gay can really contribute (that's right, I don't think either can contribute in a big way this year -- see (2) above).

(4) Dropping Gay from the deal and getting the #2 pick instead changes my thinking.  I would seriously consider such a deal, but only if there was a follow up deal to get a legit starting PG, at least for a couple years while Rubio and Conley battle it out and "earn their chops".
Celtics fan for life.

Do you think that playing next to 2 or 3 hall of fame players these last couple of years has allowed Rondo to look better than a PG he might otherwise be on par with?

Fine just not as talented as Rondo and I've seen enough to Conley to know he'll be good wide open shooter but his play making skills are so far behind Rondo it's not even funny.

Gay is so much better than anything you would get at #2

The thing is Conley's improving but so is Rondo. The big three's aging so Rondo would have a bigger role going forward. In other words, Rondo will likely have to be better next year than he was this year for the team to do as well. Is Conley going to be significantly better this year than Rondo was last year?

You are not looking at the true value of Gay for future flexability.

Ainge has said that the best way to get one of the FA will be sign and trade.  (which I have to agree with)

Gay gives the Celtics a huge piece to use in such a trade.

Losing a Lebron or Wade or Bosh will hurt, but not as much if the team gets back a player like Gay and Ray on a one year deal.

Or the opposite could be true. Put him on another team and he probably scores more and gets more assists. All three of Paul/Ray/KG saw a dropoff in their stats when they were put on the same team. Why wouldn't the same hold true for Rondo? His stats have improved in the past when KG was injured...

Of course but, that doesn't make the PG in Boston a plug-in-play position.  Conley isn't close to Rondo in play making ability.

If the trade can be some mix of Allen and Rondo for Gay, Conley and the #2 I would do this deal in heartbeat. And draft the big fella from Connecticut. I'll do this trade knowing that Rondo will come back to haunt us in the near future.

I think Scal and Rondo for No.2 and Rudy Gay is a Go.
I am not sure Memphis does it. I realize that either sign a vet or trade for a PG would have to happen, but Rudy Gay is a talent who now seems to get it and after a training camp with the Vets on the C's, he could really shine. He's got all the tools.

Has anywhere here seen Rubio play? I watched him in the Olympics. His passing is pretty much amazing.  I mean, don't get me wrong, I am not in favor of trading Rondo, but if the C's feel like they must, who am I to argue?

Can someone explain this trade for Memphis?

I think

Conley
Mayo
Gay
Gasol
Thebeat

Is not a terrible starting lineup

vs.

Rondo
Mayo
Scali?
Gasol
Thabeat?

Unless they have a SF in mind they like better then Gay in this draft.
