2nd Apron question: If a team that is currently over the 2nd apron trades away a player to get under the second apron, can they then aggregate salaries etc., or are they still considered a 2nd apron team until next year?

I?m pretty sure that future second-apron status is decided for next year based on salaries already paid, so since the league year is over there?s no chance to get under at this point.  (Assuming I understand your question correctly).

I think a team that is projected to be over the second apron next year because salary increases took them over (as opposed to making a trade) could do as you describe, however.

So say the Nuggets were under the second-apron (I forget if they were; this is only hypothetical).  Then they go over the second apron because they re-sign KCP with Bird rights.  They?re prohibited to do all the things.  Then they get back under because they trade Porter Jr and lose enough salary. The restrictions are lifted. However, if they are currently over they couldn?t dump MPJ tonight to get back under for this year, because the books are closed.

I think I remember reading that once you're subject to the restrictions, there's no way out of it until the league year ends. Which would make sense, since that's how other restrictions work (i.e. you can't be over the tax line, trade a player to get under it, then sign someone to the full MLE. You're still limited to the mini-MLE.
I'm bitter.

The Mikal Bridges trade reminds me of Minnesota acquiring Rudy Gobert. Giving up a load of picks for a quasi-star non-franchise player non clear cut All-Star.

It worked out well for Minnesota despite the concerns at the time. I expect it will for NY as well.
Minnesota made the conference finals which is nice, and they will still be good next year so the 2025 pick won't be a great pick, but who knows what they will look like in 2027 and 2029 (at least that has top 5 protection).  The Wolves could end up giving the Jazz the next Wemby and not advance further than the conference finals.

As a reminder trade was

Gobert

for

Beasley, Beverley, Bolmaro, Vanderbilt, 2022 1st (Kessler), 2023 1st (Keyonte George), 2025 1st, 2026 swap 1st, 2027 1st, 2029 1st (top 5)

For a franchise that has never made the Finals, making the Conference Finals is still a win. That matches the furthest they've ever been, which was two decades ago. That arguably makes the trade worth it for them, even if they end up being awful in 3-5 years. They and their fans aren't championship-or-bust
I'm bitter.

That is going to be a really good team.  Hopefully Hartenstin goes somewhere else.

They can?t afford him now. Robinson is their only size

Wonder what the Knicks' rotation will look like.

Brunson/Bridges/OG/Randle/Hartenstein (or Robinson at the 5, if Hartenstein leaves) has some spacing problems.  Swapping Donte in for Hartenstein fixes that, but at the cost of their interior defense - even those good defensive forwards won't hold up on the perimeter if Randle is protecting the rim.

The more I think about it, the more I wonder if Randle actually fits that team as they're now constructed.  In terms of talent, he's their second-best player.  In terms of skillset, he doesn't really do what their roster needs him to be able to do.

Shocking. I thought he was part of their future.  Love that trade for the Trail Blazers.  Brogdon has become trade filler, sad.

That's a great addition for the Blazers. Avdija is a top tier defender who can score and facilitate.

What options do the Sixers and the Heat have now that guys like Anunoby and PG13 are apparently off the table?

Not much. Butler seems to be staying in Miami also

Have to think Jerami Grant is a trade candidate those teams will ask about, given Portland's acquisition of Avdija (didn't realize Deni was that highly regarded btw, lots of people love that deal for Portland).  Grant is a step down from either of those guys but he can play.
