I think they extend hauser and White because with the way the 2nd apron is set up it doesn't make sense really to lose these guys for nothing in free agency when you cant even replace them.

if it becomes a problem maybe you trade someone like hauser or white etc. in a couple of years. and by that time maybe you have someone cheaper that you developed off the bench.

but I see no benefit to not extending them. Brad built a juggernaut and its time to maximize this run. basically the 2nd apron says you are stuck with your team, great if you are boston who built a championship team.

teams like suns, milwaukee etc. are kind of stuck with what they got.

I understand that there are limits to how big a raise a player can get via an extension.  It has been reported that White is eligible for up to four years and $127 million this summer, if the mechanism is an extension.  But would Hauser be considered an extension if they don't pick up next season team option?  Can they decline the option, he becomes a UFA on July 1 (I believe), and then they can sign him for as much as they want (no limitation as there would be with an extension)?

I think the extension limit is either 140% of last year salary or an average nba salary, which would allow the C?s to extend Rob to something like a MLE contract. I don?t know, if this is his price range, but that could be a nice sized contract that could be flipped in a trade next offseason (for Wandel Carter JR or Rob Williams etc).
Also I think Hauser becomes a restricted free agent if his team option isn?t picked up, not a UFA, but I guess it is a good news. I don?t know what contract we can offer him as a free agent. Would we have his Bird rights?

So we have added:

Baylor Scheierman
Anton Watson

Both old rookies.  Both good shooters.  Scheierman being a 1st round pick I believe gets a guaranteed contract so unless he decides to play overseas, I do not believe he can be given a 2-way contract.  Watson as a 2nd rounder, can be offered a 2-way deal.

Holiday               Pritchard               Springer
White                 Hauser-TO             Scheierman
Brown                [   Vet?   ]              Walsh
Tatum                [ Tillman? ]            [Queta-TO]
Porzingis            Horford                  [ Kornet?]

2-way:  Watson

I see a slot for Scheierman on the roster, (replace Mykhailiuk) but I am not sure there is one for Watson.  Maybe as a replacement for Queta if they decide to decline the team option (deadline tomorrow).  I am not sure that Watson would be better or more useful than Queta.  A 2-way deal may be the best thing for Watson.  They can always convert him along the way if needed.

I think the ideal scenario is to sign a decent vet wing/swing player.  Some one who is established enough that they will actually be able to play some, more than Brissett.  I am assuming they keep Hauser in any case.

Then we need to add or keep at least 2 bigs.  That may well end up being Tillman and Kornet but maybe it is someone like Drummond or Gallinari or Theis or Saric or....  I think any two of the above would be fine.

That would take us to 14.  You could use slot 15 on Queta or Watson or another vet min pick up (probably a big).  Or you keep this open as they have done the last couple of seasons.

Watson is a guy who a lot of people had probably in the late 50's or 60's on their big boards. But honestly, I think he could go either way. He's an older prospect, so drafting him at 54 might mean he's gets a guaranteed rookie min deal which actually saves you some luxury tax vs signing a vet min guy. GSW, Mil and Pho all did that last year.

The Celtics are planning to pick up forward Sam Hauser?s $2.1 million option for the 2024-25 season prior to Saturday?s 5 p.m. deadline, according to multiple league sources. A source said that the two sides are expected to begin negotiating an extension for the 26-year-old forward after the window for those discussions opens July 9.

Good news! It looks like Hauser will stick around for the foreseeable future. He was a key part of the bench in our championship run.

That leaves Quete as a team option.

I wouldn't be so sure on that. He will be around next year but I think its fairly likely that's his last season. I expect the Celtics to extend him, but a reasonable contract for him would likely cost the Celtics 100 million in salary+tax in year 1. I think he'll either get traded next summer for draft picks and/or flipped as matching salary for a Horford replacement.

I think you are wrong on that.  Not that there won?t be someone who is moved, but that it will be Hauser.  Once his contract is signed, it is no longer a marginal cost of Hauser issue specifically; if the Celtics are too expensive and need to get a cheaper rotation player, there will be six choices who could be moved.

I think he's the most likely simply because he's the most expendable, but yes its possible somebody else gets moved and Hauser ends up in the starting lineup.

I guess I?d take the field when suggesting Hauser gets moves, and ultimately I think Pritchard, who got removed from the Finals rotation, and Porzingis, who makes a lot of money but is not often available, are more likely candidates.  Especially KP as an expiring deal ? much better chance the C?s could get a good rotation player in return for him and a pick next summer.

What are we expecting Hauser to sign for? Pritchard is on a very team friendly deal. Also, if Baylor Scheiermann works out, he could make Sam expendable. I don?t see JD Davison taking Payton?s job anytime soon.

Not bad for an undrafted free agent!  And kudos to the staff who developed him further once he got to Boston.
