While most of the attention and rumors have surrounded Jerami Grant and Malcolm Brogdon, NBA insider Chris Haynes revealed on his podcast that the team could look to trade Robert Williams III. There are some teams that are pondering making a move for Robert Williams. Now, I know Robert Williams is out for the season … but teams feel like he would be somebody that could get on the cheap right now and allow him to continue recovering, continue rehabbing in hopes that he can blossom back into the Robert Williams that we’ve seen when he was playing at a high level with the Boston Celtics.
I would love for him to come back at some point in the near future and have a renaissance year with us en route to a title, to be honest.
I think we’ll have to wait at least until the 2026 offseason for that to happen (and even then it would likely mean he’s been broken for the next two years, which would be sad).
Yeah, a return doesn't seem likely, but we can hope for a future reunion. Out of the guys we've traded in recent years, he was by far my favorite.
It's interesting to me to see that he still seemingly has slightly positive trade value.
Yeah, I think you have to wonder about how often things like Steph Curry's ankles and the deal he signed in 2012 weigh on front offices. You would think they'd have enough information that bigs with chronic injuries are essentially never a good bet.
Whether it’s a good bet or not depends on the upside of the player tho. A healthy Rob Williams, even if he can only play 20 minutes for 55 regular season games a year, can be a game changer for 1000-1200 minutes in a season. His salary is affordable, and even fits into the big MLE for teams who haven’t used theirs. If I’m a team looking more to next season than this, I’d consider it. If it doesn’t work out, you can always trade him the following year as an expiring.
The team who should get him, either now or in the offseason, is Utah. His salary matches with Horton-Tucker’s, and they also have cap space that probably isn’t getting used other than in a renegotiation for Markkanen and picking up unwanted contracts. With Walker Kessler already on the roster, Rob wouldn’t need more than a halftime role — and if he’s healthy enough for that part-time work, his talent is enough to help elevate an ascending team like the Jazz. Meanwhile, if he gets hurt again, he’d be an expiring contract the following year to help them in a package for a star if one becomes available. He’s not someone you trade an unprotected first for, but to the right team he has positive value.
