When will this trade be official?

Still haven't heard if Porzingis has opted in yet. I think they are working one an extension at the same time.

I thought that had to happen tonight...

It does, but some one said there could be an extension wink wink nudge nudge for him to say yes. Or its coming down to whos giving up picks and small money. Who knows!

Does this mean PP stays? The guy that looks to be out is GWill. Interesting to see what happens to him. Sad to see Gallo go though.

This would be really great if it goes down as reported. I like Brogdon, but he didn't really complement this Celtics team. He was also a black hole while he was in there, and he took playing time away from White to close games despite White being the more effective player.

We clearly had a front court depth issue, and replacing Horford has been a major concern. Porzingis at 27 years old who can dominate in the post, shoot the 3 well, play solid interior defense and pass well for a big man addresses all of these needs. If he stays healthy, this is a legit long-term upgrade and could get us over the hump for banner 18.

Say what you like about Brad and the front office, but they wasted no time in bolstering the coaching staff and addressing the biggest roster need of this team.

Forsberg from NBC Sports Boston thinks this might be a one year type of deal to help the Cs get under the second apron the season after next.

Quote
Porzingis would add much-needed size and talent to Boston’s frontcourt while better balancing a roster that had a guard surplus last season. Porzingis would give head coach Joe Mazzulla three starter-quality bigs alongside Al Horford and Robert Williams III.

Brogdon was scheduled to earn $22.5 million in each of the next two seasons. Boston couldn’t feasibly splurge to keep the trio of Brogdon, Marcus Smart, and Derrick White.

Even splurging to keep Brogdon for the 2023-24 season would have prolonged a guard logjam. Fear of the new second apron would have forced the Celtics to move his salary sooner than later. In dealing Brogdon to acquire Porzingis, the Celtics would take on more immediate money but give themselves an easier path to avoiding the supertax next summer.

Porzingis would need to opt in to a $36 million final season of his current deal as part of the swap (an extension would be possible but would complicate Boston’s long-term outlook). That would give Boston one season to look at how Porzingis pairs with the core of this team and then make a decision on a path forward next summer when Jaylen Brown’s supermax extension could begin. Porzingis would also be insurance if, for any reason, Brown isn’t part of Boston’s long-term plans.

There is no clear path to retaining Jayson Tatum, Brown, and Porzingis long term, at least without absolutely stripping the supporting cast to bare inexperienced bones. Still, the Celtics can cross that bridge in a year and have an easier path to getting under the second apron, even if it’s simply allowing Porzingis to walk in free agency.

There is a very clear path.  Sign him to a 2 yr extension and he aligns with smart and white 3 year elite championship window.

If Gallo is included in the trade and Washington buys him out, could he return to Boston if he clears waivers?

Yeah, I’m not buying that he’s a 1 year rental. I think once he opts in they will immediately work on an extension.

Yeah.  Quit treating the second apron like the apocalypse.  You either pay the price to keep a contender together, or you end up like the Red Sox.

I've got to think that if the Celts were dead set on dumping Brogdon and Grant they could do better than one year of KP.  I assume they like that trio along with White / Smart / Horford / Timelord.  No need to blow that top seven up.

I think they added a rule that you can’t return after a buyout to the team that traded you. I don’t recall if it’s one year or the rest of the season, but some restriction was put in place to avoid any sneakiness with buyouts.

Lol imagine if Porzingis after all this time decides to just opt out entirely and this deal doesn't go through

I believe that rule was made after we traded Gary Payton to the Atlanta Hawks and he returned after they waived him

Yeah, I like how active he is and not afraid to shake things up, kind of the opposite of the last few years of Ainge.

Do think he failed not better supporting Joe this year, though. He’s certainly remedied that mistake already.
