I initially didn't love the idea of Porzingis when I heard it - especially given his injury history. But the more I think about he Idea the more I like it.
The Celtics are probably the perfect sport for Porzingis (and vice versa) because:
1. A bench role is starting to make sense for Horford as he's ageing and finding it harder to play big regular minutes, so a starting frontcourt sport is there for the taking.
2. The fact that we already have two strong bigs in Rob Williams and Horford means we can somewhat afford to gamble on Porzingis' injury history, because we would be depending on a three-man frontcourt rotation rather than a two-man rotation, which gives us a extra redundancy.
3. The addition of Porzingis gives likewise gives us redundancy for Rob Williams and allows Horford to fall back to a 6th man role, where he can lead the second unit and get more rest.
4. Porzingis gives us that third consistent scoring threat that we desperately need in those cases where Tatum and Brown are both struggling wiht their shots - our offensive no longer desperately relies on those two guys to be shooting well every night.
5. Porzingis gives us a guy who can get us efficient buckets inside when the outside shots arent falling, which is something we really need. At 7'3" KP is a good 5"-6" taller then most of the small ball Cs /PFs in this league and can just shoot over most opponents inside. His outside shot is also pretty much unblockable, so he should give us that guy who can consistently make outside shots even against some of the tougher perimeter defences - along with being able to draw opposing bigs out of the paint (opening up more rebounds for Rob/Al).
We also gain a third guy who can protect the rim and give opposing teams trouble on the defensive end - not even Embiid can shoot easily over those arms.
Sources: Wizards, Celtics and Clippers are in strong talks on a trade that would send Kristaps Porzingis to Boston, Marcus Morris and draft compensation to Washington and Malcolm Brogdon to Los Angeles. Sides are still working through details and Porzingis’ $36M player option.
So most of the draft compensation should come from LAC’s side then, as they’re clearly giving up the least amount in terms of player value. But we still have to give up something beyond Brogdon to make it work financially.
Brogdon & Gallo works on 'paper' (read: the trade machine), so you need approx 6-7 mil from somewhere.
Let’s also not forget that JB is part of the backcourt in his most natural position. If we get Zinger we’re going back to the two big lineup in some fashion, which pushes JB back to guard primarily leaving a good four man rotation of Smart, White, JB, and PP with JD as a reserve, too.
Will be interesting to see what we do with Grant.
I like this guard rotation defensively, but I really don't love the idea on the offensive side of the ball. Think JB needs to play more off the ball (or step it up a whole lot) and I'm not sure putting him at the 2 spot does that?
I agree - part of me is kinda hoping that once Brown secures his monstrous new contract (which will make him the highest paid player on the team, and maybe in the league) then maybe he'll no longer feel a need to try to compete with Tatum to prove himself, and maybe he'll be more willing to make sacrifices to fit in to his role on the team. I'm not holding my breath on it...but I'm hopeful, because that's what this team really needs to go to the next level.
