Re: Time outs, I still don't know why nobody brings up the fact that time outs are also about slowing the other team down when they're cooking, especially on the road when the crowd is also jazzed up and giving the opposing team energy. By calling a time out, the other team is forced to go from a high of playing great basketball to sitting down for a few minutes while a dance crew runs onto the court. It's not only about your own team recomposing themselves or being able to call a set play.

Maybe Joe doesn't believe it affects the other team, but as far as I know he's never been asked about that aspect of the time out. It's only ever been about "teaching our guys to play through a run." I don't get it. Does Steve Kerr not call time outs because he's got a team of veterans that have already won championships? As far as I know, he calls time outs like a normal coach does.

If there are some statistics Joe is basing this on that question the efficacy of time outs, it would be nice if they shared that with us. One thing I do know, however, is he's not saving the time outs because he's precious with them. Just look at some of his extremely questionable coach's challenges.
We did this last season in this very thread - I can go back and find the posts later if you'd like, but I don't think any of us really want to go through those discussions again. Suffice it to say, the existing evidence that time-outs interrupt the flow of a team is hotly contested. Some of us (like me) would say it's closer to 'folk wisdom' or 'common sense' than others, but I think with sports it's also very difficult because, even though it's difficult to quantify, we're all aware that players heating up, for example, is absolutely a real, tangible thing.

edit: here are the pages in question, with links to the studies that we have.

Yes, 14 games in but I'm fast approaching the Fire Joe realm!

I'm in the "let the playoffs define him" camp.

Feels a bit more reasonable than to fire someone 14 games in when the team has the best record in the NBA despite having arguably the most difficult schedule to date.

I do wonder what would've happened if they had lost Game 4 of the ECF.

It’s possible Wyc would have called rank and made a decision Brad wouldn’t have, but I don’t think so.  There was a lot going on behind the scenes with that team because of the Ime situation, and both of them knew it.

Yeah, barring something drastic, I don't see Joe getting fired during the regular season.  But, if he appears overmatched like last playoffs, he needs to be gone.

Whatever unhappiness or resentment had developed with players last year over Ime being fired over an off-court issue did not create Mazzulla's glaring incompetence as a coach. Marcus Smart walking around angry with the organization does not influence Joe's bumbling use or non-use of timeouts. If Jaylen Brown was sulking during warmups, it's not going to be the cause of Joe's de-emphasis of defense in favor of his moronic belief that 3-point attempts is the most important statistic in basketball. Any discontent among the players over the loss of Ime is not going to result in the Joe's inexplicable decision to go away from the two-big lineup of Horford and Rob that was a major factor in the Celtics surge in the second half of the previous season. All those failed coaching strategies were going to happen whether the team was upset about Ime or not because all those changes in the team's approach to the game were and still are on Joe Mazzulla. We are currently in a title window and Brad is wasting seasons.

Brad did let Marcus go, so I’m hoping, even if it’s against the odds at this point, that he’ll have the balls to move on from Joe.
