It's the right move. Glad he apologized for his previous comments and is man enough to quickly see he made a mistake and is owning up to it. Jaylen is a quality guy.

I'm a bit more cynical here. I have a hard time believing that Adidas dropping Kanye and Forbes removing him from their billionaires list didn't play some part here. I thought doubling down on stick with Donda was financially motivated and I think this move is financially motivated. This just has a better PR shine on it.

Cancel culture is communism.  I don't care how ridiculous anyone's stance is. I support anyone's ability to say whatever they wish.

To say whatever they wish without consequence?

That's what they call a democracy. Freedom of speech as a foundation.
Without absolute freedom of speech a democracy will fail.
Like it's falling everywhere in North-America and Europe.

Cancel culture is communism (excellent remark bij KG LL).
It's in fact cultural marxism.

The entire argument is nonsensical.

Free speech means that you can say what you want without the government punishing you.  It doesn’t mean that private citizens will give bigots a free pass.

If we’re making economic analogies, let the free market decide.  Here, the market has determined that antisemitism isn’t desirable.

I hate talking politics on a sports forum, but the notion that ’cancel culture’ has killed free speech…is rubbish.

From a historical perspective, American’s have never had it so good in regards to freedom of speech.

During WWII, American citizens were locked up in interment camps simply for having Japanese heritage. During the Cold War, just being suspected of having socialist ideologies, would have you blacklisted for life.

bingo.

Kanye is free to say whatever he wants without reprisal from the government (except the illegal stuff pointed out earlier).  he's not free from the consequences that come from what he says.  if he chooses to offend people with bigoted/racist statements, people are free to also make their displeasure known and if that has economic and/or social repercussions for Kanye, so be it.

Roy is right on here. At some point, freedom of speech was conflated with freedom of consequence. Those two things are not the same. Kanye can pop off with his stupidity and ignorance - our government can't touch him but private businesses can absolutely decide not to associate with him.

Can we please close this thread so we can move on from Jaylen’s lapse in judgment earlier today? Jaylen did the right thing, and I applaud him for quickly correcting course by cutting ties with Kanye after being made aware of how antisemitism is not to be tolerated. The scary part is perhaps Trump/Trumpers put Kanye up to this antisemitism nonsense to start the ball rolling in trying to bring antisemitism back from the shadows like they did with nationalism? Make no mistake about it: Right-wing fascists always eventually come for many different groups of people, not just illegal immigrants and socialists. Never forget the poem “First they came…”:

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

A lapse in judgment? Kanye's been on a downward spiral for awhile now. Jaylen knew who he was going into business with. Kanye said that slavery was a choice in 2018.

2018. 4 years ago. In the time since, his behavior has deriorated significantly. But Kanye was a billionaire, right?  Jaylen had the full picture of the person he chose to go into business with. Stop coddling a grown man and hold him a accountable.

And even then, in many democracies there are instances where the government can and will punish speech (inciting violence or hate speech, for example).

What’s funny is I’m being told to stop coddling JB. Look, I was all over this Donda nonsense during the NBA Finals precisely because I know what kind of disaster Kanye is. JB is a young man who’s allowed to make mistakes. When he was a pre-teen, Kanye was a big star that nobody knew was such a mess. We can forgive JB for this lapse in judgment. He quickly changed his mind earlier today and severed his ties. Leave JB alone 🤣

While many agree that cancel culture is very dangerous and must stop, the same is true of antisemitism. Frankly, cancel culture has been so out of control, people jumping on people for RELATIVELY minor transgressions (like telling a joke about females), that we now see literally one of the biggest musicians on the planet espousing antisemitism…Definitely not what was intended by this cancel culture environment, or presumably that is the case, but here we stand, with truly disgusting behavior/comments from Kanye and people defending him. Cancel culture has been so out of control that it is creating an environment of increasingly disturbing behavior/theories becoming more common and defended. If so much seems so wrong, and one mistake is treated the same as literally espousing Nazi-esque ideas, then should we be surprised when the real monsters and monstrous ideas come out and become more prevalent/defended until they literally wipe out everything we all hold dear?

We need to return to common sense sanity. Obviously it’s absurd to treat someone saying what Kanye said the same as someone who simply shared a joke about women, for example. Stop cancelling people for the latter and the like, so everyone can unite to stop the former—so most everyone can unite to stop the truly dangerous ideas that threaten everything.

Bill Maher is making the case far more eloquently: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vo8t86Fi2JQ
