GSW cannot afford to Draymond.
Without Draymond, they would be a bottom 5 defensive team in the league. Even with a great offense, they'd still only be struggling around .500.
Not only would their defense crater but so too would their rebounding. Klay and Poole are both bad rebounders. So they don't get much help from their guards on the ball. Wiggins is a mediocre rebounder. Their backup SF lacks size. They have no real big forward to replace Draymond so likely will be forced to play even smaller with two SFs instead of a SF+PF. That leaves who, Kevon Looney? They'll be one of the worst rebounding teams in the league.
GSW will get killed without Draymond there to cover up their defensive & rebounding frailities.
To have any hope of getting back into title contention, they have to keep Draymond Green. He is too important to their team to lose him.
Well they can't just lose him and not replace him, but I think they can find better options, that cost less, and aren't anywhere near the headache Green is. Now maybe Green just solves part of that problem by taking less money, but for more years. Perhaps a 4 year 60 million deal with a no trade clause. He can finish out his career in GS if he wants to, doing something like that. Value in that I would imagine even if it means less overall money than if he just opted in and rolled the dice the following summer.
I agree that there isn't going to be a huge market for him outside of this situation -- it's too big of a locker room risk to introduce someone as volatile as Draymond this late in his career (and I'm a huge Draymond fan). I like the idea of a rich but team-friendly deal to keep him around.
Defensively, I think Kuminga is ready -- when he's had his opportunities, he's been long, athletic, and ferocious at the point of attack defensively. He's not much of a rebounder but he needs an opportunity to prove himself next year in bigger minutes. Only 20 years old and a big part of the future.
It's a shame they missed or gave up on Wiseman so early...understand Payton is the right move to help solve for this season but Wiseman is 21 years old and put up 13/8 on 53% shooting in Detroit. He's still incredibly raw but they made a hasty choice to go all in.
