The pick swap is protected for the first overall pick, only.

Oh. My. Lord.

For Derrick White.... on TOP of our best bench wing, our second best bench wing (not saying much), and a first round pick this summer in the teens.

Oh. My. Lord.

It’s JR and a pick in the 20’s for DW.   RL will be replaced by a more productive buyout player.  The swap is annoying and seemingly unnecessary but there’s a better chance than not that the Cs aren’t hurt by it.

I’m pretty psyched to see what some here think is a very solid player in Derrick White.

Let's hope it's a pick in the 20s, anyway.  It's #18 right now

Wow, Brad.

Just big praise to the Celtics brass for this systematic remake of the bench.

I'm not buying the overpay argument here.

I’m not, either. It’s not just a question of what a mid- to low-first round pick is worth in an absolute sense; it’s also a question of what it’s worth to Boston. Does Boston need another rookie, requiring extra investment of coaches’ time? The Celtics are not in that phase of the cycle. It would be different if they had a chance at a top pick.

Getting a starter/heavy rotation point guard/combo guard that improves offensive flow without compromise on defense or size?

Well said. Boston, with this deal, has improved its defense and also improved its shot creation. Getting good shots at crunch time has been an issue this season, to put it mildly.

Sweating a pick swap in 6 years seems well worth it.

Have to agree. There are no guarantees and a lot of luck is involved. I’d bet on Boston having a good team that season.

Because the C's ship Langford and Schroder out too, we now clear enough roster space to actually play our two young guys, both of whom could be our best shooters longer term

On the whole a good point; it looks like with this move that management believes in the future of those two.

This team — already a stout defensive unit — will he stifling between White and Theis coming in. We have great switchable size up and down the rotation.

Great point. White can create shots like Schroeder (better so far this year, with a lower turnover rate) and is a better defender. With Theis they've upgraded the defense over Kanter.

More shooting — well, we have more minutes available for Pritchard. Nesmith too so hopefully he can start knocking it down.

They both shot well the previous season as rookies; inconsistent playing time is the likely culprit.

Langford is no longer a prospect.

Not for Boston, at any rate, but he has shown this season that he has a future in the league - that was not at all clear before this season. He was in the rotation until he had health issues. He’s maybe too deferential but does the right thing on the court, makes the right play. Risk-averse. Doesn't create a lot of shots.

One thing that Brad has done today is reduce the glut of wings on the roster. It was always  either going to be Langford or Nesmith; Nesmith has star potential if he can play acceptable team defense. This is his big chance. Not only is Romeo gone, but Richardson as well.

Another thing that Brad has done today is improve the team defense. There were two big weaknesses with Schroeder on this roster: he’s a mediocre defender, and he needs the ball. Pairing him with Smart didn’t work well. Replacing him with Derrick White is a nifty solution: Like Schroeder, he can create shots off the dribble and manage a team; unlike Dennis, he can play off the ball or on - as important, he’s a tough and versatile defender who can switch and guard up.

Watch Boston’s offense climb steadily up from here the way that its defense has this season already; if anything, Brad has strengthened the defense, despite the departure of Josh Richardson.

Sucks for Richardson.

Good luck to Freedom. His last Boston shot was a made 3. Pretty cool way to end for a big. Love the guy, hope he catches on somewhere good.

'I was proud of Marcus Smart. He did a great job of keeping us together. He might not get credit for this game, but the pace that he played at, and his playcalling, some of the plays that he called were great. We obviously have to rely on him, so I’m definitely looking forward to Marcus leading this team in that role.' - Jaylen Brown, January 2021

It'll be more than annoying if 2028's Jayson Tatum is picked by the Spurs with our pick. Somewhere, Rick Pitino is smiling.

I mean, at least Billy King got Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce.

For all the hand wringing and wrist slitting over that swap, if both Jays are still here, it's most likely the swap doesn't happen, especially since, there is also a great chance Pops retires and San Antonio, in a tiny market, sucks for a long time.

This is what scares me. If the Jays do actually leave this could be disastrous

6 years is too far off in NBA terms to predict in any meaningful way. That is why that pick swap is such a gamble.

Memphis losing the #2 pick in '03 to Detroit from a trade they made  in '97 is all I can think about when it comes to this pick swap.

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

There are 4 guys on Boston's roster who drastically affect winning (and it shows in pretty much all advanced stats): Tatum, Brown, Smart and RWilliams

Horford, GWill, Richardson are fine / neutral.

It pretty much goes off a cliff from there, and that included Schroder.

I think if you asked the Celtics front office, they have a strong feeling White will be the 5th player on that list. Theis is a minor piece, but a useful return for unloading Schroder.

Salaries are fine. We're under the tax, but planning to be over the cap, and White makes 1/3 to 1/2 of a All-Star player's salary. Theis makes half of that.

It's still Brad negotiating these right?

Rather than that Mike Zarren?

This move seems to possibly be a prelude to a future bigger deal in which we need the pick we traded this year to be exercised before the deal can be made.

Exactly what I was thinking. After the draft the Celtics will be able to package salaries along with, say, their 2023, 2025, and 2027 draft picks (amid the Stepien rule against trading consecutive years’ picks) for a max-level player, if one is available. This is the reason the trade was structured the way it was, including the pick swap in ‘28. The Celtics can still go in multiple directions this offseason, including adding salary via those TPEs. Let’s see how hat happens obviously, but it looks like very clever long term thinking by Brad, Zarren and company.

Would have preferred the swap to be top five protected just in case, but a top one protection still makes this a great trade. Pops will probably not be coaching the Spurs in 5-6 years?

Smh 🤦‍♂️ horrible.

Is the pick swap protected at all? Do we know?

The #1 is top-four protected this year and next.

The pick swap is protected for the first overall pick, only.
Guessing that 6 years from now, Brad is back coaching somewhere - probably not here.

Oh you must have missed that part of the trade? If Pops retires before 2028, the pick swap is rescinded as Brad will be taking over the coaching and GM duties in San Antonio from Pops.

So we lost Richardson (which I liked and I think gave his contribution, very good player), Schroeder and Langford for this White (which I honestly don't know)? Man, or he's a sort of Klay Thompson or we've lost something in the backcourt and, to me, this was already our weakness.
