This move seems to possibly be a prelude to a future bigger deal in which we need the pick we traded this year to be exercised before the deal can be made.

Exactly what I was thinking. After the draft the Celtics will be able to package salaries along with, say, their 2023, 2025, and 2027 draft picks (amid the Stepien rule against trading consecutive years’ picks) for a max-level player, if one is available. This is the reason the trade was structured the way it was, including the pick swap in ‘28. The Celtics can still go in multiple directions this offseason, including adding salary via those TPEs. Let’s see how hat happens obviously, but it looks like very clever long term thinking by Brad, Zarren and company.

TP both. Weird year indeed for a swap, but context here helps.

A name that's almost never mentioned, but how good is Derrick White?

A package deal for White + Poeltl ($26M in salaries)?

The Spurs aren't any good right now. These are the guys who could bring back some decent (draft) assets.
Makes some sense for them.

Do you think that the Celtics and Spurs discussed including Poeltl in the trade?

Could be the reason why Stevens traded for Theis (a similar type of player and contract) at the last minute for a package that looks a bit hasty assembled (as Houston doesn't need Schröder).

There was rumors of us wanting Theis  for the last few weeks.

been missing Richardson, Romeo, this year's first and that swap since the trade.  White has been underwhelming to be kind and has in no way been worth what we gave up

Me too. And Richardson. I can still see why the C's made the trade at the time. The PG position was a huge problem for us at the time.

Yet they are having White play off ball when Pritchard is in the game tonight…  ???

Pritchard being in the game is a function of having White instead of Richardson (and Schroder).

You've really been missing Romeo?

Yeah, I have.

Since his last game to be honest.

You know.

Back in the year 1712.

Pritchard was bringing the ball up when White was in the game. I don’t understand that. Don’t you want the guy that can shoot playing off ball?

Bringing the ball up doesn't really mean much in terms of off-ball movement. I would like to hope that we're more than a one pass offence

being a tad facetious only because he's out so often but when he was on the court, his D was as good as White's (at least) and his driving ability got better as the season went.   so far in the playoffs, I seriously believe Richardson and Romeo would have been more productive than White.

At this point I'd settle for a ham sandwich.
Back to wanting Joe fired.

Awesome to see what Ainge’s Celtics have been able to do despite Brad Steven’s blunders. You would take Richardson and Romeo’s defense over White right now, never mind the first round picks.
