Yeah, it is funny that when we traded Moses Brown and got Richardson, many felt that it was just a salary dump and were even more outraged when we gave Richardson another year.  Now people are questioning how we could give him up.

I don't know enough about White but he seems like an upgrade over Richardson and a slightly better timeline to match up with the Jays.  It does seem like a lot to give up for him but I will reserve judgement as I just don't know how good he is.  I go more by what I see on the court than stats and I just haven't seen White play or at least I don't remember.

I think they're dissimilar. Richardson plays more like a wing, White more like a guard.

Agree, but combined with the Shroeder trade, it will be more about impact.

White will be a good replacement for Smart when we eventually trade Smart away. At least there is that.

I love White. So I'm thrilled!!!
Great news.

Little sad to see Richardson go (was that really necessary?).
However a bit late here in the Netherlands.
I'll look into all this tomorrow.
A lot is happening apparently.

They can play together.

I'm not sure that they shoot well enough to succeed in the NBA of 2022 by playing them them together for long stretches. Situationally, it would seem to work, especially defensively in the final minute of a game. These two together remind me of the old Bulls backcourt of Jerry Sloan and Norm Van Lier, but that was a completely different kind of league then.

This move seems to possibly be a prelude to a future bigger deal in which we need the pick we traded this year to be exercised before the deal can be made.

I’m happy about landing white but giving up a 1st?? Oof that hurts. 1st rounders are pretty valuable and having to give up a real player in JRich PLUS a 1st sounds expensive for a guy who will be coming off the bench

Both of them are shooting better than Horford.

League sources tell MassLive that the Celtics’ will send a top-4 protected first-round pick in 2022 to San Antonio. That pick will roll over to top-4 protected in 2023 if it doesn’t convey in 2022. If it remains protected through both drafts, it turns into a second-round pick in 2023 if it also doesn’t convey next season. Boston currently is set to have the No. 18 overall pick amid a six-game winning streak so it is highly likely the pick will be sent this season to San Antonio this June barring Boston losing in the play-in tournament and also getting some long-shot lottery luck to move up from a spot in the teens.

The other key part of the deal with the Spurs from a draft compensation standpoint will be a 2028 first round pick swap option for San Antonio. League sources tell MassLive that Boston’s pick is top-1 protected for 2028 so the Spurs will have the ability to move up to any other spot that Boston lands at in the first round in 2028 in the event that the Celtics finish below them in the standings.

This is a somewhat risky play by Boston, giving up a potentially high lottery pick for San Antonio but that was the price their front office demanded to give up their versatile guard in White who is entering his prime. The Celtics have a pair of young All-Stars in Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown who will be just entering their 30s in 2028 so clearly, the team hopes that they will still be playing in Boston and thriving later this decade, making the swap option inconsequential.

Can we also trade that 2028 pick with the swap attached?

Yes.  The trading team would simply get our pick, wherever it ended up.

Saw this on Twitter:

Quote
Derrick White among guards:

➼ 3rd in 2P FGs defended per game
➼ 3rd in 2P DFG% (opponents shoot 5.8% below their average)
➼ 6th in rim attempts defended
➼ 2nd in rim DFG% (opponents shoot 10%! Below their average)
➼ 2nd in charges drawn
➼ 1st in total blocks

Good luck
