Wow, Brad.
Just big praise to the Celtics brass for this systematic remake of the bench.
I'm not buying the overpay argument here.
I’m not, either. It’s not just a question of what a mid- to low-first round pick is worth in an absolute sense; it’s also a question of what it’s worth to Boston. Does Boston need another rookie, requiring extra investment of coaches’ time? The Celtics are not in that phase of the cycle. It would be different if they had a chance at a top pick.
Getting a starter/heavy rotation point guard/combo guard that improves offensive flow without compromise on defense or size?
Well said. Boston, with this deal, has improved its defense and also improved its shot creation. Getting good shots at crunch time has been an issue this season, to put it mildly.
Sweating a pick swap in 6 years seems well worth it.
Have to agree. There are no guarantees and a lot of luck is involved. I’d bet on Boston having a good team that season.
Because the C's ship Langford and Schroder out too, we now clear enough roster space to actually play our two young guys, both of whom could be our best shooters longer term
On the whole a good point; it looks like with this move that management believes in the future of those two.
This team — already a stout defensive unit — will he stifling between White and Theis coming in. We have great switchable size up and down the rotation.
Great point. White can create shots like Schroeder (better so far this year, with a lower turnover rate) and is a better defender. With Theis they've upgraded the defense over Kanter.
More shooting — well, we have more minutes available for Pritchard. Nesmith too so hopefully he can start knocking it down.
They both shot well the previous season as rookies; inconsistent playing time is the likely culprit.
Langford is no longer a prospect.
Not for Boston, at any rate, but he has shown this season that he has a future in the league - that was not at all clear before this season. He was in the rotation until he had health issues. He’s maybe too deferential but does the right thing on the court, makes the right play. Risk-averse. Doesn't create a lot of shots.
One thing that Brad has done today is reduce the glut of wings on the roster. It was always either going to be Langford or Nesmith; Nesmith has star potential if he can play acceptable team defense. This is his big chance. Not only is Romeo gone, but Richardson as well.
Another thing that Brad has done today is improve the team defense. There were two big weaknesses with Schroeder on this roster: he’s a mediocre defender, and he needs the ball. Pairing him with Smart didn’t work well. Replacing him with Derrick White is a nifty solution: Like Schroeder, he can create shots off the dribble and manage a team; unlike Dennis, he can play off the ball or on - as important, he’s a tough and versatile defender who can switch and guard up.
Watch Boston’s offense climb steadily up from here the way that its defense has this season already; if anything, Brad has strengthened the defense, despite the departure of Josh Richardson.
Sucks for Richardson.
Good luck to Freedom. His last Boston shot was a made 3. Pretty cool way to end for a big. Love the guy, hope he catches on somewhere good.
