Hardly anyone believes it. I’m pretty sure if it said the Celtics will pull out of the trade you’ll believe it. ;)

I bet Kyrie re-signs if we trade Tatum AND Brown for AD. Who can beat that offer? We ensure we can reload with our plethora of draft picks. If Irving walks, we match the best offer for Rozier, so we cannot end up without an exceptional starting lineup. Nobody can outbid us for Morris as sixth man.

Irving (or Rozier if Irving walks)
Smart
Hayward
Horford
Davis
Morris (6th Man)

Brad Stevens can turn that roster into a championship, particularly if Leonard and Butler head to LA, although it sounds more likely with Kyrie. Klay and Durant are non-factors next year, so everything is wide-open if Kawhi heads to LA (and even if Kawhi stays in Canada, we can topple the Raps). Worst-case, AD walks in 2020 without a championship after Irving walks July 2019, so we trade Hayward and Horford for picks in 2020, and we reload with a ton of picks while still having Smart and Rozier at a young age to make it through the rebuild. Best-case, we replicate what the Raptors accomplished, regardless of whether AD resigns (I bet on Kyrie and AD for years to come if we win it all next year).

It just makes the most sense.

Goodbye, Tatum and Brown, and good luck in New Orleans with Zion. May you blossom into the next Big Three of the West. Maybe we’ll see you in the NBA Finals someday.

Hello, AD! Ainge has been waiting years for you. You’re going to love being a Boston legend!

All of the young guys are gone except Smart, the guy who shuts down the top offensive guard for you, so welcome back, Kyrie. It’s totally your team, with your good buddy AD as the KG to your Pierce, and Horford and Hayward are ready to help you win the title without LeBron...

Let’s do it!

Of course, but how to keep Smart out of the trade?  I think he's needed for salary matching.

Why bother with draft picks if you're throwing away the 2 best draft picks of the last 20 years?

So short sighted. Kyrie isn't coming back and Davis is a 1 year waste of time.

Nope:

If the Pelicans do not want all of the filler, ship them to another team with cap space and include a draft pick as a sweetener if necessary.

Tatum and Brown are not going to win a championship here as the top dogs. Kyrie and AD have as good of a shot as Kawhi and Lowry did this year. No risk, no reward. You want the best big man in the game, it’s going to cost you. New Orleans will do it because Zion can be a number one guy to Tatum and Brown as the 2 and 3 guys.

throwing away?  Acquiring Davis and having Irving re-sign isn't throwing away anything

#NBA Celtics - The framework that Danny Ainge has offered the Pelicans (player wise) is Jayson Tatum, Marcus Smart, G. Yabusele, and Robert Williams for Anthony Davis. David Griffin is using the Lakers for “leeway” to receive more draft picks in any deal from Boston.

If that’s true - he’s probably trying to get the Memphis pick out of this, as well. Can’t imagine that he’ll get it though, as that’s a lot to risk.

No it's not. Who cares about draft picks? They're trade chips anyway. Just get the deal done.

Huh? Were the third picks in 2016 (Brown) and 2017 (Tatum) also just trade chips that nobody cared about? Keeping the Memphis pick allows us to still have a likely high draft pick to potentially hit on if AD leaves.
maybe it is a high draft pick.  It might be 10th.  It might be 14th.  Heck maybe in some miracle Morant is a monster and Jackson takes a huge leap and they make the playoffs.  the only guarantee is that Boston is not getting a top 6 pick next year.  And for the record, this year the team picking 7th was the 4th worst team in the league and won 22 games.

Exactly! And New Orleans will do it because Zion is undeniably the top guy, Tatum can totally be a top Scottie Pippen, and Brown can be the third wheel. In comparison, if we lose Irving and do not get AD, we do not have a number one guy, we will be paying Brown like he’s a number one guy this time next year, etc. Ultimately, without AD we are not winning a championship anytime soon...

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Not sure why we would do this when we wouldn't have to. I suppose the premise is that not only would AD be necessary in keeping Kyrie, but so would Smart(?). That seems like a stretch. I guess I generally agree that you do pretty much anything you can to keep Kyrie - as he's an incredible asset - but I'd probably trade Tatum/Smart/Yabu/14 for AD now. And then at the deadline, trade JB/Morris or Rozier (re-signed)/MEM pick for a different star. Not sure I just want to dump both right now.

It boils down to Kyrie loves how Smart takes care of the top offensive guard, and he almost surely wants the young trio of Tatum, Brown and Rozier gone for him to come back. Add his good buddy AD and, with Durant injured, what situation is better than sticking with Boston? Tucking his tail and joining LeBron and Butler in LA? I think not.
