Can someone explain why we have to make this "two" transactions?

This isn't something the league said, it was the teams that came up with the two transactions thing.

Players can only be traded in deals that involve player contracts, draft considerations, and cash.  You can't trade a coach's contract in a deal that involves players.  You really can't trade a coach's contract at all.  You can negotiate some sort of compensation for the releasing a coach from his contractual obligations, but player contracts can't be in the mix.

You can break up a deal involving multiple players/picks into several deals for purposes such as generating trade exceptions because the overall deal is legal.  You can't break up a deal involving KG and Doc into two separate transactions because the overall deal is illegal.

Exactly. I'm all for disliking Stern, but the league lawyers told the teams that this deal couldn't be done, and the teams tried to do it anyway.

Which "overall deal" are you talking about? I don´t see one. You have proof of this accusation? Does Stern have proof? 

How can a deal which both fanbases are ok with get nixed?

I honestly don't understand. Please tell me why it was wrong of David Stern (the GM of the Hornets at the time) to veto a trade that would've sent an aging group of vets (Scola, Martin, and Odom; would've doomed them a late lottery pick). Instead, they got some young prospects (Aminu, Gordon) and Anthony Davis. They don't get Davis if they have Scola, Martin, and Odom; they wouldn't have been in a good position to get the #1 pick.



He blocked the Cs because they were basically trading Doc. Everybody knew that they were trading a coach. That was against the rules, and it's wrong to blame him just because he's enforcing them.

The Heat had the cap space and Lebron/Bosh took less money. There were no jurisdiction or logistics issues.

Let me start this off as, I'm an attorney although I admitted do family law, but if I were the C's or Clippers and really wanted to do this deal, I'd sue the NBA.

This is why and dependent on the problem with the deal being trading for Doc Rivers which is what I understand the problem to be.

You can't trade the rights to a coach.  Pretty cut and dry.  The reasoning for this rule seems pretty apparent that coaches aren't a part of the CBA and teams can't force a coach to go somewhere he doesn't want to go.  If Avery Bradley gets traded to Minnesota, tough luck Avery and buy a coat.  But coaches can't be forced to go to destinations they want no part of.

Fast forward to this transaction.  The Celtics aren't trading the rights to Doc River's contract.  They are agreeing to let Doc out of his contract with the Celtics.  That isn't the same as trading his contract.

Doc is proving what most people already knew. He's not the coach you want for coaching younger teams. His style is built for veteran clubs looking to contend. Players that he can affect by pushing their buttons.

  Stern's an idiot. He's apparently great at marketing, maybe at negotiating CBAs, but any time he gets involved with actual basketball matters it's like Bob Kraft going to draftee workouts with a stopwatch. It's just not his cup of tea.

Get Bob Cousy on the line, let him call Derek Fisher. Let them have a long talk about what it means to have the freedom to choose where to work. Let´s see if Fisher calls Stern. This deal is also affecting Garnett´s career.

Stern isn´t doing his job correctly. He´s supposed to bring money into the league. Does he know how much the Clippers might lose in TV money if this deal doesn´t go through? He wants them to stay cheap?

Not going to read 27 pages to see if this scenario was mentioned, but....try this...Doc talks LA into letting Bledsoe go....C's trade Garnett and  Terry for Jordan and Bledsoe thus giving C's cap relief and what they wanted originally except for picks

In  July C's drop the non-compete and Doc goes to LA
