NBA ready to veto any Rivers deal

Stern told ESPN Radio in New York that the league would not approve that arrangement because Rivers’ inclusion violates the collective bargaining agreement and that the multiple trade scenarios are an obvious circumvention of league rules.

“The teams are aware that the collective bargaining agreement doesn’t authorize trades involving coaches’ contracts.”

“If you think those, at this point — having been all over the media for the last week — are separate transactions … I have a bridge that I would very much enjoy selling to you,” Stern said.

In a separate ESPN radio interview, Stern repeated that the NBA was aware of the possible end-around plans and ready to act if a final proposal involving multiple trades came to fruition.

“I would say that if we know that what the parties really want to do is one [trade and] they are going to break into two [trades] for purposes of trying to avoid the restrictions that the collective bargaining agreement places on it, we know how to deal with that as well,” he said.

What a scumbag

Could we let rivers go there for a pick without the kg trade ? Or is that considered a trade too ?

By being difficult, the Clippers have backed the Celtics into a corner. When Doc still had the option to return, the Celtics could demand compensation to let him out of his deal. Now that this issue has continued in the news for so long, the Celtics have lost all leverage as it seems Doc really can't come back anymore after this.

I don't like the precedent of not getting compensation. The coach is under contract. You can't just let him go when information gets leaked to the press or teams will always leak information to the press for leverage.
Under no circumstances would I let Doc walk for free.  Really, I think the onus is on Doc.  If he can't make a deal, the HE must decide what he wants to do.  Either come back and coach or go to TV.  Either way, Doc wouldn't be coaching in the NBA for the next three years unless the Celts receive some form of compensation.

I totally agree with this.
NBA Officiating - Corrupt?  Incompetent?  Which is worse?  Does it matter?  It sucks.

this deal is dead, danny is back to square one

Well that's awfully definitive. Got a link?

sterling is cheap, it was hard enough for him to pay doc 7 mill, now his going to give picks aswell? think you might see flying bacon first

wth do picks have to do with sterling being cheap or not? the clippers dont want to trade the picks because they might need them, not because they're cheap. if they were cheap they wouldnt be prepared to offer doc that 7 mil deal, griffin a max contract and cp3 a $100 mil plus deal.

ok sterling is the most generous owner in the nba  ::)

okay, nobody is even trying to say that. but saying not giving up the pick is sterling being cheap is just not right. and what does generosity have anything to do with this? he should just feel like a nice guy and give celtics the picks? so the celtics owner is also a huge d. bag cause he's wanting picks for rivers, instead of being nice and just buying him out? lol wut
you should be happy we're even offering your joke franchise a pick for a coach like Doc

There's been so much jibber-jabber that I've lost track.  Has anyone posted this tidbit from Woj yet?

After Clippers management privately insisted to people that they were awaiting approval of owner Donald Sterling on draft-pick compensation for Rivers, no offer has been made to the Celtics and there's growing concern in multiple corners of  these talks that the Clippers' front office has no authority to meet Boston's request of a first-round pick to bring Rivers to Los Angeles as coach, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Yes, I just heard the same report here in so cal on ESPN LA radio.  What a complete waste of time even dealing with the Clippers.

Just keeps getting worse for the Cs:

USATODAYsports: league might make C's give up a pick in the deal - http://ow.ly/mel4g

The league sucks.

I understood its tinkering in the Chris Paul trade last year:  the league owned the team, and should have control over the package it gets.

Here, even though I don't like this trade, it appears that the NBA is messing with us just for the sake of doing so, to exert its power.

Allegedly the argument that the league is making is that KG -- who just led the playoffs in rebounding, and who is an elite defender -- isn't worth DeAndre Jordan and two #1s by himself.  That's laughable.

This is truly asinine by the league (Stern). A perennial all-star in KG, for an unproven, offensively challenged, decent shot blocker at best in Jordan - and a couple of LATE 1st rounders.

This is starting to rise to conspiracy theorist levels, IMO.

Yes, the Celts *wish* they were anywhere near as successful as the Clippers. The Celts haven't won a title for a few years so very few Clipper fans would be aware that it happened, but it did, and more than once.

yeah,  i called this in the other thread.  it just sounded like danny is talking to someone who has no ability to offer anything that hasnt been preapproved.  freaking clips are full of losers.

So, it's cool to trade players.

It's cool to get compensation for losing a coach.

If you do both at the same time, though, it's a veto.

That makes sense.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
So basically the following is going to have to happen.
we make the trade
KG for DeAndre Jordan +2 first rounds picks.

This must go through.
Then Doc quits the Celtics with a handshake agreement to go to the Clips.

Dont think Stern can stop that. Might have to call in Lawyers but hes full of shizz if he thinkshe can stop a deandre +2 picks for KG trade.
All Stern has heard are rumors from writers, it would never hold up in court.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

Read that last line again. One more time.

It appears to be the case.  If I am DA I am really steamed.  What a huge waste of resources and hair pulling if they were never authorized to do the deal.  This is the type of thing that hurts the clippers organization.  You think the lakers even take their calls about DH after this fiasco?  Not that they would anyways, but no way now.

Please Danny, just sit down with Doc, KG, and PP and figure a resolution to this without dealing with the Clippers.  At this point, Doc steps down, KG retires or plays this year.  PP can do either as well.  It isn't worth being a door mat for other GM's in future trades to even continue this process with the clippers.

The sad thing is that I think Stern can block the trade.  Especially if other owners have already complained.  Unfortunately the rules and the rulebook are Sterns, and if you disagree, well you are out of luck.
