While I like Okafor better as a player, Kaman obviously makes a lot of sense contract-wise. He leaves Danny with cap space this summer if he decides he wants it.
I also think some people really underestimate the impact playing with the Core Four could have on him.
There were many people on this board last year deriding the signing of Shaq because they felt he was done. Some even went as far as to say that he actually made his previous two teams (Phoenix and Cleveland) worse when he was on the floor.
Then he came here.
And while the end of the season was disappointing, when he was healthy, the Celtics were the best team in basketball and Shaq was at least reminding people why he was the most dominant offensive force of at least the past decade.
Why?
Because Shaq went from being expected to be the #2 option on offense in Phoenix and Cleveland to the #5 option here. So unlike the rest of career where defenses were focusing on how to stop him, stopping him was an afterthought.
Quite frankly, the fact that Perk scored at all (given his propensity to dribble and get stuffed under the basket or drop the pass) and that BBD looked so good all had to do with opposing defenses giving them good looks all the time.
And while Kaman certainly isn't Shaq, he's proven his whole career that he's quite a capable scorer. If he comes here and plays with the best talent and the best passers he's ever played with, I think we can expect him to also play the best basketball of his career. That may not translate to more PPG, but I think we can certainly see him shoot a higher percentage and have some really great games.
