I'm curious where people think this team would finish in the West:

Dampier / Bargnani
Boozer / Jeffries
Lewis / Jefferson
Garcia / C. Bell
Rose

Also, any of the above are available in trade.

Starting 5 is probably a top 4 seed team. I think the lack of firepower off the bench hurts a lot tho. Still a playoff team, and I think they'd have a good chance to make it to round 2.

  • I left Indiana. Because it was horrible.
Nashville Magic:

PG: Jason Terry, Ty Lawson
SG: Joe Johnson, Mike Dunleavy, Roger Mason
SF: Vince Carter/Andrei Kirilenko
PF: Lamarcus Aldridge, Amir Johnson
C: Andris Biedrins, Cole Aldrich, Nikola Pekovic

With a smaller, scoring lineup of Terry/Johnson/Carter/Kirilenko/Aldridge likely. Thoughts? Hate it? Love it? Want to punch half my players in their stupid faces? Feedback is appreciated going into trade season, for sure.

In my opinion, starting Ak47 over Vince Carter is a no-brainer.

I agree, put AK47 coming off the bench allows many more options than bringing VC off the pine. I'd rather have Vince start games and AK finish them, especially when coming off the bench allows more flexibility for Kirilenko to shift to the 4, where he is most effective as a defender. Kirilenko is the guy I want doing the dirty work when it counts most - VC is the guy I want sparking this team early in the game. I think that setup plays best to both players' strengths.

On top of that, Kirilenko is more suited for a 6th man role than Carter, so this plays into chemistry as well. Ideally they'll be alongside each other for long periods of time, so it wouldn't be much of an issue, and I'm sure they'll both start several games throughout the season, esp. based on matchups.
CB Draft Bucks: Chris Paul, Dwight Howard, Tobias Harris, Zach LaVine, Aaron Afflalo, Jeff Green, Donatas Motiejunas, Jarrett Jack, Frank Kaminsky, Lance Stephenson, JaVale McGee, Shane Larkin, Nick Young

DKC Bucks. Also terrible.

What about Dunleavy at the 3?

Dunleavy can play both, just as AK47 can go SF/PF, Mason can go PG/SG, and Terry can go PG/SG as well. There's a good measure of flexibility with these guys, which makes me optimistic that they would mesh well in a traditional offense or in a quicker paced small ball setting. The amount of size at SG/SF is an added bonus as well.

I feel like with Terry and Johnson already in there he'd be better off starting a defensive player who is capable of running the floor. He's a perfect fit for that back court.

I'd have to disagree with your thoughts abotu allowing ak47 off the bench providing you versatility too. If there was any point where you had 5 bench players you'd be really struggling for points.

Lawson, Dunleavy, Ak47, Amir and Cole is pretty rough. Putting in VC gives you another weapon off the bench with Dunleavy and your other defenders make up for them.

Ha.  Bargnani is better than you think, and with where they were picked, Garcia, Jeffries, and Bell are all competent players.

The team's depth sucks (for some reason I can't figure out), but the one thing the bench does well is plays defense.

What can be expected of Dampier at this point in his career? He hasn't come anywhere close to averaging 30 minutes a night in years. You may need to start Bargs, and have Damp come in for defensive assignments late in the game.

Lewis didn't play a single minute at SF last season. Can he, at 31, get his shot off against opposing wings? Perhaps more importantly, can he defend them?

Not a big fan of Bell as the primary backup at SG, due to his durability issues. Garcia is a nice swiss-army type defender who will chip in with the occasional bucket. Jefferson seems a luxury off the bench.

I think one or two trades to tweak the lineup could make this team a top 4 team in the West.

I agree with almost all of that, although I think Lewis is fine to play SF.

I don't think I would ever have a lineup with all 5 second teamers out there, though. I feel like that's pretty rare to see in the NBA or even college. The good thing about this team is that they have volume scorers and shooters that can carry the offense for long stretches in case of foul trouble or fatigue - Johnson, Terry, Carter, Aldridge, and to a lesser extent Dunleavy are all proficient shooters who can keep the team in the game. Even without AK47 staring, he's still getting 30+ minutes, and a good chunk of those will be with the first team offense. However, through coming off the bench, I have more flexibility to deal with foul trouble, fatigue, or egos. For example:

VC in foul trouble - JT/JJ/AK/LA/AB
JJ in trouble - JT/VC/AK/LA/AB
Big man in trouble - JT/JJ/VC/AK/other big

I think Kirilenko's usefulness there provides a bigger asset to the team than having him start, although I respect and understand your position. Just because Kirilenko isn't starting doesn't mean he's necessarily playing fewer minutes than Carter, and just because there's a starting unit out there doesn't mean that those 5 guys will be playing together at the most important parts of the game. AK47's flexibility is a nice bonus that makes a fluid lineup capable of handling lots of different teams.

Definitely in the argument for the Championship, though I think they'd eventually lose to a team with some size. Pick and rolls with an elite PG-PF/C combo allllll day.

Paul Westphal.  I think they'd be better than .500 -- the West is pretty weak -- but I think that their max potential is a second round out.

I agree with that assessment, too.  This probably wouldn't have been a championship team, but it would have been in the conversation, and with some savvy trades involving draft picks, who knows?  Ultimately, though, the lack of big time defenders throughout most of the starting lineup would have hurt.

I think Delfino and Dudley are good improvements to the roster.

I would only play one of Jarrett Jack or Jamal Crawford. Not enough minutes or touches otherwise. I wouldn't play either player ahead of Delfino or Dudley. Your starting lineup already has a lot of scorers who need the ball (Parker, Boozer, Rashard, Shaq) so players like Dudley and Delfino would have more value.

Defensively, the combination of Shaq + Boozer + Bargnani is atrocious. I would expect your team to be bottom five defensively. That is a killer blow that your squad won't be able to overcome.

Again, close to .500. Probably a couple of wins over. The high power offense being offset by defensive frailties.
