So Danny was on WEEI, and said that he expects Sheed to Retire.  Any thoughts on what this might mean, and what the liklihood is of us being able to move him?

Sheed + #19 + future first (heavily protected) to Portland for Greg Oden.

Why would Portland do that?  They are not ready to give up Oden yet, and certainly not for a mid first round pick.

Why would Sheed want to leave $13M on the table?

I think it is a fantasy (but maybe not that far fetched -- Sheed is a weird dude), so I figured I would fantasize a bit myself, while not being completely ridiculous (eg: Sheed for Devin Harris, straight up).  Portland is rumored to be trying to move up in the draft, without giving up their 1st round pick, so they accomplish that in this trade, plus get another first rounder, plus (I believe) drop low enough in salary such that they can extend an offer above the MLE to a free agent this offseason.

Is it just me getting the sense the Cs knew the chances were high Sheed would retire at the end of the season when they signed him.  I don't know how I feel about that yet.

I don't think this was the case, I think for them to realize it Sheed would have to realize it himself first. If Sheed had realized that he was done he wouldn't have asked for 3 years.

A couple of times Sheed said during the season he was glad he was almost out of the NBA but I didn't realize he meant so soon. Looking back it's possible he did. I don't think it's because he feels he's done as a player so much as he's tired of the league and the refs.

He has made plenty of money.

He has said that it was physically uncomfortable playing this year.  He doesn't want to go through that again.

And if there ever were an athlete who I think does not enjoy being uncomfortable, it's Sheed.

I really think Sheed is happy with the amount of money he has made, and for some reason, I feel like he has spent it wisely.  He is notorious for comments about getting paid, but I think that had more to do with "respect" than the actual money.

So if he decides he would rather sit on his couch, chomping on chips, then I don't think he has any problem giving up that cash.

Well it was sort of in the C's interest too - a one year deal and he'd have no value right now. Now he's a free cap trade, meaning they can pickup two guys - one for Sheed and one with the MLE.

BTW - in retrospect, I wish they had gone after Grant Hill full tilt. Hill would have been a perfect compliment to the team this year, bring value in the next two - and they probably could have gotten a decent fourth big for the LLE or possibly a TA / Scal trade for a big no one wanted. All that being said - Sheed stepped up big in the playoffs and at least made his season as a Celtic memorable for good reasons as well as bad.

Sheed for Michael Beasley, straight up.

Supposedly, Danny inquired about him around the trade deadline so I'm hoping it's in the back of his head. We just need official word on what Wallace is gonna do.

I know people keep whining about Beasley's off the court issues, but the talent is there. He just needs to be around focused veterans (KG and Paul, anyone?) and out of Miami Beach.

Rondo + Beasley = nice future.

In all honesty, I want this trade to happen so bad and I've already envisioned it so much that I'll be incredibly bummed if it doesn't happen.

I would love to get beasly without giving up any of the big 4. There is no way Miami trades him straight up for Sheed. It would probably take Sheed + #19 and maybe a future pick or BBD. I know Miami is not in love with him, but he was the # 2 overall pick a few years ago.

Beasly would be a perfect backup for PP and KG who he can learn under. He could get down both PP and KG's to about 30 a game, with beasly playing about 30 minutes too.
I'd love to get Beasley too, I don't like the idea of him playing SF all that much though.

Still I think he'll get moved soon enough, but for a better package than the Celtics will likely want to offer.
I don't understand why you don't like the idea of him playing SF?
I thought the playoff series against Miami definitively showed that while playing the 4 Beasley can only guard an undersized player.
I think he is quick enough to play the 3.
I think he can be a great talent at the 4, he couldn't guard KG or Rasheed but he can be a very good 4 against most other match ups.

I have less faith in him moving his feet against many of the SFs in the league.
Fafnir, I just read an article that statistically backs up what you are saying. I guess I was wrong.

Fair enough.

But there are other options instead of retiring, like getting a buyout.  Sheed could ask for a $8M buyout, spread over 2 years.  That leaves the Cs with a non-tradeable $4M per year contract on the books.

$13M is a lot of money to just give up.  I'll believe it when I see it.  Until then, it is fantasy (although fantasy with some legs), and so I reserve the right to fantasize about how to use Sheed's contract.  I don't think my proposal of #19 + Sheed + future first for Oden is that out of the ball park given "reasonable" fantasies.
