My first though is Atlanta for Williams.  They want to get their salaries lower.  He seems like the prime canidate.  He will only earn about 400,000 more then Wallace next year.

Who else?

Beasley and Cook?

Francisco Garcia?

Jarrett Jack?

yeah, he does become an expiring contract - but I'd rather let his deal expire than take on bad salary

if we can get young talent to put next to Rondo, great, otherwise, not so much

I don't think Williams is bad salary.  I think he is a good player, especially if he gets a real PG to pass to him instead of two shoot first PGs he has in Atlanta (Bibby and Crawford)

The tricky bit is that if Wallace retires, we now have two pretty gaping holes on the roster to fill to realistically be a title contender next season (backup wing to take a lot of the load off Ray and Pierce, and now a backup big man to do the same for KG).  Could Wallace be traded for someone decent at one of those spots?

Logistically, how would this work?  If Wallace retires, he's going to forgoe the remainder of his contract - but who's to say that the C's don't trade Wallace to Atlanta, and he suddently decides that it's dumb of him to leave $12M on the table.  Wouldn't that be a huge risk for any team making a trade?

Even if Wallace *is* considered an expiring/non-guaranteed contract, we don't really have any kickers other than #19 to make a deal happen.

Don't see his contract doing too much to help us in a trade.

Well, I think he could be used as part of a bigger package, or a sign and trade, but if we are talking a smaller trade, here are the guys I would look really hard at:

Marvin Williams (if they want to resign Johnson and bring Childress over, they might look to dump him)

Nazr Mohammed - He had a great year last year, and would allow the C's to save the cap room next year.

Charlie Villanueva

Jeff Foster - Indy is close to the luxury tax, and would likely be happy to shed the salary

James Posey and Darren Collison - how desperate are the Hornets?

Leandro Barbosa - if they lose Staudemire, their cheap owner could look to sell off everyone.  Given the emergence of Dragic, Barbosa is not as necessary, so they might welcome getting him off the books.

how about offering wallace (if retiring) and 19 for turriaf and randolph.

warriors slide under the cap, shed ronney's deal and get a decent pick in a deep draft.

we solve our rebounding issues and get our KG replacement in one fell swoop.

pipe dreams

That would definitely be intriguing, although I wonder if they would hold out for a better deal for Randolph.  I don't think they consider Turiaf as a bad deal that they want to get rid of.

gs has a number of long term deals on the books and need to restructure their team. loosing turiafs 2 year 4 mill would help give them flex they would need to rebuild.

Right, but Randolph is their best asset.  I think they would hold on to him to try to either get a star, or to move one of the really bad contracts like Maggette instead.

here's 2 new ideas

Wallace and s/t Marquis to Miami for Beasley and James Jones
-This trade allows us to use Daniels to get a shooter in Jones and a flex forward to spell KG and Pierce

Wallace and s/t Marquis to Chicago for Hinrich and s/t Warrick
-Again, Daniels is added as an asset to Wallace's retiring contract, and we get a star in Hinrich who can start or play 6th man PG/SG. Warrick is a huge bonus to play behind KG and make BBD expendable.

Can't stop, Rondo!

ideally, we trade wallace for a MLE-level contract at either the 4 or the 2. that way, we still have our full MLE to get one of those two key spots. maybe wallace for beasley. or wallace for (S&T) tyrus thomas...charlotte wants to cut payroll, and what better way than writing a MLE contract off the books?

from http://celticsgreen.blogspot.com/2010/06/lets-talk-draft-picks.html

One final note, if Sheed really is going to retire, there are a few options that might allow him to give the Celtics a nice boost going out the door. Several teams are still looking to shave salary either to be bigger players in the free agent market or to position themselves below the Luxury Cap and get the league distribution as well avoid the tax. A trade obliging one of these clubs might pick up a useful piece as well as a draft-pick sweetener. For instance would Chicago deal Hinrich and a pick for a soon-to-retire Sheed and maybe Scalabrine (and when they waive you, come right back and join the staff as an assistant coach) signed to a non-guaranteed contract allowing the Bulls to shave $9M off their commitments and leave them able to sign two max/near-max free agents. Hinrich would be an expensive solution to backing up Rondo and Ray but the contract expires conveniently enough in 2012 along with Garnett’s (and perhaps extensions for Allen and Pierce?) A more onerous contract, at least longer, would be that of DeSagana Diop who would provide the length and strength lacking when Perk is out (as he may well be most of the year). Once again would Charlotte add a pick for the salary relief? How bad does Miami want to get out from under the contract of Michael Beasley and add a third big name? Golden State has been rumored to be eager to be free of the contract of Brandan Wright ($3.4); would a sign and trade of Anthony Morrow (for say $4M) fill out a deal for Sheed? Would it be worth a pick as well? Personally I think each of these options has merit.

sheed retiring would give us some much needed flex.
imo we must use our resources to try and set us up long term. we cannot wast our limited flex on stop gap or middling players.
so I say no to t thomas (to many ?'s)
no to outlaw (where's the killer instinct)
maybe to hinrich (killer with a killer contract), beasley (heart)
yes to a randolph and morrow, athletic, defense minded offensively talented players who fit nicely next to rr and kp.

I actually like Marvin Williams and think he is underrated and under used in Atlanta.  Especially with the dominating guards on that team.

BTW, I should add that I really do not think Sheed is going to retire, and if he does, he will still work out a decent sized buyout to make it happen.  So he won't be a fully expiring contract, and someone is going to have to CTC.
