Well, looks like Dallas got themselves a fine deal, maybe even enough to make them relevant this year:

@STEIN_LINE_HQ Deal might not be finalized before Monday, but five main pieces are Josh Howard/Gooden to WAS and Butler/Haywood/Stevenson to Mavs

Maybe Wyc, et al were not really willing to take on Jamison's contract after all, because it seems like the better deal for the Wiz would have been Butler/Jamison for Ray and junk.  I mean, they'd have shed much more salary.  Dallas got a steal, in my view.

Not necessarily, the Wizards are still going to move Jamison.

Not to dwell on this too much, but I still don't know why this can't get done WITHOUT Ray: House, TA, Scal, and J.R. for Jamison.

Is Butler really that much better than Josh Howard?  Seems like they are both a couple underperforming 30 year old small forwards who were capable of 20 and 6 last couple years.

Josh Howard has been playing poorly on the offensive end so it is an upgrade. Not one that dramatically effects the Mavericks chances of winning a title though.

And Dallas will miss Josh Howard's superior defensive ability.

But Haywood was thrown into the deal too, and he is a 7 footer with an expiring contract and not without talent.  So it seems like a steal for Dallas.  But it does remain to be seen what Washington gets for Jamison.

Haywood was thrown in because Washington had clearly decided not to resign him and they wanted to get rid of Deshawn Stevenson's contract.

They will still move Jamison and then they will have shed more salary than the rumored Boston deal.

Exactly.  Including a 30 yr old center averaging 10 pts, 10 rebs, 2 blks, and he has an expiring contract, just to shed 1 year of Stevenson at 4.1M seems poor value to me.  I am thinking they will give up Jamison for mere expirings at this point, after seeing what they did with Butler and Haywood.  The guys they got for them are just expirings, even if Howard is a decent player, it's only the contracts that Washington wanted.

So, for that reason, I think that they could have gotten just as good value from us by trading Butler and Jamison to us for expirings, and then I think they could have offed Haywood and Stevenson in a separate deal too (if they were hellbent on dealing Stevenson), since, in my view, to get a pretty decent center is worth taking on one year of Stevenson at 4.1M.  I had read that Portland had interest.  Anyway, whatever.  I was kind of fired up at the prospect of getting the Butler/Jamison package.  Ah well.  Dashed hopes.

Wizards getting very poor value for Butler, imo. Poor job by their gm.

They got cap relief - which was their big goal ... Howard is not guaranteed for 2011 ... Dallas still has Erick Dampier as a huge card to play ...

How's that?  Is there a big market for Dampier?  He's still got another year on his contract after this one.
