When news broke in Brooklyn that the Nets had traded away their #5 pick, fans were outraged. "We wanted Garnett" some fans shouted. Others thought the team would have been able to draft Chris Paul or Kobe Bryant despite contrary reports from teams drafting ahead of the Nets.
"We liked the players we thought would be available to us at #5," Nets GM Sideshow Raheem told reporters after the trade was announced Thursday, "But when the Bulls called us and made their offer, we just thought it was too good to pass up. Look, I know fans wanted a superstar, but my job is to build the best team, and with 5 picks in the first 3 rounds we're confident we can put together a team that will be able to compete with anyone in the league." Does this mean the team is done dealing one reporter asked, Sideshow Raheem replied with a smile, "The trade definitely brought a lot of flexibility to the team, we're happy to stand pat, but as we just showed with this trade if the right deal presents itself we won't hesitate to make a move."
The Nets coaching staff of Sideshow Bob, Sideshow Mel, and Sideshow Luke Perry were stopped outside the teams practice facility and asked what they thought of the trade, Head coach Sideshow Bob side-stepped the question saying, "It's not our job to make trades, it's our job to coach whoever Sideshow Raheem brings in."
