Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid — the reigning NBA MVP — has been diagnosed with a displaced flap of the meniscus in his left knee and is weighing rest/rehab or a procedure, according to two sources.

It sounds like either a meniscectomy (removal of a meniscus) or a full repair (surgery). The former is a 4-8 week timeline. Latter is 4-6 months. Keep in mind though, Embiid has had a partial meniscus removal done already on his left leg in 2017. Doing another could truly lead to arthritis + chronic knee problems for the rest of his life. Obviously their team and medical professions will decide and have specific information but I think Embiid is better off shutting it down for this season and getting it fully repaired. Even if he chooses rest/rehab or another removal he won't be 100% this season and might only be able to play limited minutes.

Is this his previous injury he was dealing with?  Or the one caused when the player fell on his leg?

The wording of this is strange to me. Why call it a "displaced flap of meniscus"? That just means a tear, call it a tear.

The wait on this is strange to me, I'm not sure what else there is to be gained by waiting until next week to make a decision if you know, right now, that he has a tear.

In any event I'd bet this ends up with him getting the repair done. The 76ers and I'd imagine Embiid himself aren't going to risk this being a lingering issue, and with the cap space the 76ers have this offseason they'll have a shot to reload and come back with a healthy Embiid and upgraded roster next year.

I just don't think this is a guy you wnat to take a risk on helath wise.

Is this something people will keep saying when Embiid is 35, waiting for his 7th knee surgery? At one point you just have to accept the reality, same as with Oden.

Ya maybe, but until he's done you have to do whatever gives you the best overall shot of getting a full, healthy all in playoff run out of him.

LaVine undergoing right foot surgery and is out for the rest of the season.

Pretty big news, he was seen as a pretty big trade chip at the deadline for some teams.

I read they were in serious talks with Detroit for a package og Bogdanovic and Ivey. Tough blow for the Bulls.

I guess the bidding war for Derozan just went up. It's going to be an interesting deadline with some teams like GSWs, Lakers, Sixers and Heat fading and possibly looking for a desperation move while up and coming teams like OKC, Minnesota and the Knicks looking to take the next step.

This sucks for Embiid. And the narrative that he forced himself to play that game vs the Warriors in order to shut his detractors up and still be in the running for the MVP just makes the issue worse.

The Sixers are getting smoked right now. Without Embiid they really are a different team, I didn't realize their backup centers are Reed and Bamba. That's not good. I mean they aren't terrible but now it's on Maxey to go scorched earth most games. Maybe Harris steps up but tbh he's been pretty underwhelming for them since signing a 5/190M deal

My god the Knicks love is nauseating.

ESPN gushing all over them

My sister put ABC on in the TV while we were eating dinner and all we heard is Stephen A. Smith (Knicks fan btw) just screaming and shouting hype for the game ::)

My dad joked that all SAS does is yell

I forgot but with Doc now coaching is there a plan to replace him on the alpha ESPN commentary crew? I’m sorry but Doris Burke is just not it. Breen is carrying this broadcast so hard on his own. They need a 3rd person in there

Milwaukee already down 20-44 in the first quarter at Dallas  :o :o

We lost to the third string Lakers, but at least we’re not the Bucks who are staring down the barrel of a 0-5 Western Conference road trip!
