I don't think there's any chance he [Donovan Mitchell] signs an extension there [Cleveland] ever. And if it was up to me, I would trade Mitchell today.

This is what CLE gave up to get Mitchell:

Quote
Lauri Markkanen, Collin Sexton (via sign-and-trade), No. 14 overall pick Ochai Agbaji, the Cavaliers’ unprotected first-round picks in 2025, 2027 and 2029, and the right to swap first-round picks with the Cavaliers in both 2026 and 2028

The player option for Mitchell isn't until 2025-26.  I do not think CLE is going to trade Mitchell anytime soon.  Maybe at the trade deadline in 2025 or something like that.  But how could they give up all that and then trade him after just one season, a season that was pretty good.

Did the writer give any reason or proof for this claim that there is no chance that D Mitchell would re-sign for Cleveland?

If the C’s don’t win it all next season, I’d be interested in moving Brown for Mitchell.

Mitchell, White, Tatum, Zinger, Timelord. I could live with that…

Yep. I was thinking the same thing. Jaylen for D Mitchell.

Bontemps was just expressing his opinion with what HE would do, not what he thinks will actually happen. He doesn't think the Cavs will significantly improve this season and that Mitchell will ultimately not want to sign an extension, so trading Mitchell with two seasons left now would probably give you the best return. The Cavs are obviously going to look at it more optimistically, thinking that a better outcome in the playoffs will give Mitchell enough reason to extend.

Additionally, I'm sure Bontemps is basing his opinion on the widely-held belief around the league that Mitchell will eventually still try to get to the Knicks.

Would Mitchell be happy with us swapping his bestie for him?

I'd rather have Garland anyway.  Brown for Garland.

You’d rather have the guy that’s never been an all star over the one that just made 2nd Team All NBA?   ???

If the trade is straight up for brown mitchell is definitely who we should get. If it was a world where we somehow kept brown I could see garland working better (but that is impossible)

First, Garland has been an all star.  Second, yeah, I'd rather have the 23 year old 5th year player that is signed for 5 years at really good money that is a true playmaker who can also shoot at an elite level.  A guy that would be a much better fit with Tatum because of the elite shooting and playmaking.  Garland would take Boston to the next level.

winning cures all. I don't see Mitchell leaving the Cavs unless they take a big step back. They have a very talented team. honestly I thought they underachieved last year because IMO they were a better team than the Knicks.

also, knicks just got brunson. how are they going to fit in Mitchell unless they get rid of him? this is just lazy offseason media with not much to talk about.

Seems like if Mitchell were to demand a trade, the most likely landing spot would be Brooklyn. He is partial to NY (grew up in Westchester Co., my old stomping grounds), and among the obvious desirable destinations (Knicks, Heat, Nets), Nets are a combination of best fit and best assets available in a trade.

I agree with Moranis that, if we were to do a trade, I'd much prefer Garland to Mitchell. He would be a much better fit here.  It would require some adjustment by Tatum, but frankly would much prefer the offense being initiated by Garland that Tatum.  Garland plus Tatum plus Porzingis would be a very good complementary fit, more so than the current 3. I'm still against trading Brown, more for sentimental reasons, but I really like Garland.
