With Walsh signing a regular contract, here is where we stand:
White Pritchard Banton
Brown Brogdon Champagnie (NG)
Tatum Hauser Brissett
Porzingis OPEN Walsh
Horford RWilliams Kornet (NG)
2-way Davison OPEN OPEN
I am listing Davison as a 2-way, but I am not 100% clear on his status. He has a QO which I was advised by one of the wiser posters that this is likely for a 2-way. He could get offered a full roster spot by another team and we could match that based on the QO. My understanding is that Brissett, Banton, and now Walsh have all signed "real" contracts so they are formally on the roster. Spotrac lists Brissett and Banton as fully guaranteed, I am not sure about Walsh. They can play in Maine but they are roster players, not 2-way.
If I have this all correct, we have one open roster spot and also 2 non-guaranteed contracts that can easily be waived. I would like to see the Celtics make a trade with the Grant TPE ($6.3M) and some of the 2nd round picks to get a reliable bench PF. For now, I guess the bench PF could be Brissett but I don't know his game well enough to know if he is a PF or SF or what. It would be nice to have a natural PF on the bench to replace Grant in any case. We could also pick up a bench C, start RWill, and Horford could be the bench PF. We have some flexibility there thanks to Horford's versatility.
I am surprised that we gave Walsh a regular contract. I was expecting him to be a 2-way this season (he could always be converted), like Davison was last season. I have no idea what to expect from him. I know money is a factor in this but can he be expected to contribute more than a vet min player? I will assume that this is what the Celtics believe and be optimistic that he will be the next Draymond Green but without the drama.
Assuming we do a trade for a bench PF, we would then have only the two NG contracts to potentially waive and fill with a FA. I would think that for sure we can upgrade on Champagnie. Even if we do a trade with the TPE, he could be waived to save some money and keep the roster at 14. Kornet is actually useful, in my mind, so I see him being on the team to start the season.
