Re: Smart. He's seeking a max extension (approximately four years, $80 million; same money the team doesn't want to pay Evan Fournier), and still faces a tough negotiation. Celtics are targeting 2022 free agency.

$20mil a year seems like the going rate for a player like Marcus Smart. He should not be looking for anything less than that.

Yeah, I mean, a guy like Smart who gives up his body night in and night out has to maximize his earnings while he still can.

You guys are better at this than I am, but here goes...

I love Lowry's game, but, I think Riley is way off spending his money on Lowry.

Just don't see it as a great match and I repeat, Lowry is a top player, but don't like the "match" in Miami which is good because, Pat Riley is the enemy.

Why do you not like the match?

I understand the age concern and questions as to how long Lowry will be worth that much money per year but why do you not like the match?

I love the match for Lowry. He gets to play next to Jimmy Butler who he can share the ball-handling and playmaking responsibilities with. He gets to play next to Bam Adebayo who is a great high post passer similar to Marc Gasol who Lowry excelled next to. Miami runs a three point heavy offense which suits Lowry's game. Lowry's whole personality - physical and mental toughness - is Pat Riley & Miami down to a T.

Portis re-signs with the Bucks for 2 years, $9 million. Second year is a player option. That's an absolute bargain for the Bucks! Didn't expect him to stay tbh.

I’m shocked he settled for that deal so quickly.

He really wanted to be there.  They only had non-Bird rights, and this was the most he could get with that.  He’ll have Ealry bird rights next year for a larger deal, and this year he gets a no-trade clause plus security with an option.
They could have offered him their taxpayer MLE which starts at $5,890,000. He settled for less than that.

I have a soft spot for the Bucks cause I'm greek and they have Giannis and Thanasis. Was also impressed by their decision to boycott a playoff game in support of the BLM movement. I follow them a lot. Portis is really happy there. The Bucks fans absolutely love him. He's like a cult hero in Wisconsin. Even so, pretty much nobody expected him to stay. He could have gotten way more money. Shams is reporting that he turned down offers from the Heat and the Mavs. Hats off to Bobby. He prioritized happiness over money.

I don't understand the Bobby Portis love. He is a below average player who got a below average (MLE) contract. Sounds about right to me.

Spurs spending all their money on mediocre role players. What happened to that organisation?

A reminder to our fans that “cap space” doesn’t mean much if nobody wants to play for you.

Yeah I worry about that for next year.  We throw everything into one plan to clear cap space for one year and what happens if no one wants to sign?

This is starting to feel like Danny’s masterplan for AD. We know how that ended.

There are several top tier free agents on the market next summer. If your going to go all in on clearing cap space to land one of them, next summer is the right time to do it.

This season will be all about Tatum, Brown, Stevens and Udoka selling Boston as a premier destination for those top tier free agents.

I get that, it is a packed year for free agents, but how many of the top free agents available next year will even remotely consider Boston?  I know that is a rhetorical question, but you can apply a little logic and the best tier just doesn't seem likely for us, except maybe Beal.  So it kind of comes down to Brad / FO going all in for one FA that we don't even know if he would like to be here.

Curry - No, just reupped with GS off the market
KD - After not going with us last time, it is incredibly unlikely that he comes here now
Harden - highly doubtful
Doncic - Dallas will give him whatever he wants to stay
Kyrie - haha....not happening
Beal - literally the only top tier reasonable chance
Jimmy Butler - reupped with Miami off the market

So yeah it was a big list that is getting smaller, and the number of players that might actively consider Boston was small to begin with.

Completely agree.   I feel pretty good about this year being an up year for the C's.  I think Boston with Udoka and the Jays will be an attractive landing spot.  Good gamble -- better than the all-in for AD.

Yeah I enjoyed their playoff run and have respect for their team.  Good for them.  Keep it together another year and see if you can do it again.

I hope you’re right. But I think Brad still has to make some moves to improve this year’s roster and make it competitive, and at the same time, more attractive for those potential top tier free agents. All his “targets” have been signing elsewhere (KO, Jeff Green) and we might lose Fournier for nothing. Hopefully the expanded TT deal brings in more talent as well.

Heat will be super interesting. Continue falling behind.

Almost $18M/year for Duncan Robinson? That seems outrageous.

I remember thinking that last offseason about Joe Harris but he proved to be worth every penny of that contract at $15mil per annum.

Elite shooters with solid size are worth a great deal in today's three point heavy NBA league.

This is why we should think long and hard about letting Evan Fournier go.

Exactly. The only reasonable ones that I can tell are Beal and Lavine, both of which I could easily see be off the market before then with extensions or committing to stay where they're at. Just don't see this as a great strategy, especially when it comes at the expense of a year of our young guys' contract that may be remembered down the line when it's time to re-up with us.

11/7 with some of the best shooting in the league is pretty good. Dunno where you got below average from.

I don’t believe he wanted KO or Green.  Neither known for toughness.

I wasn't crazy about EF, but seeing how things have went contract wise, if the C's had a chance to retain him in the 17-18mil a year range, it feels like it might have been a mistake not to do that.  If EF has a good year next year that 17 mil will seem like a major bargain, and that contract would have been really movable in a larger trade if you do find some all star to bite in free agency.

I’ll just say that if the Celtics are playing for 2022 free agency they better Edited.  Profanity and masked profanity are against forum rules and may result in discipline.ing land the big fish because if they punt this season and then lose their free agents by prioritizing someone else who doesn’t come, you can just start planning the inevitable Jays trades.

This is where I'm at.

Can't pass. Can't dribble. Only a spot up shooter with low volume. Hurts team offense despite positive individual numbers. A well below average offensive player. A solid but unexceptional defender. Overall, a below average player.
