San Antonio gives Doug McDermott 3 years, $42 million.

But Fournier isn’t worth $17 million.  Unmovable!

This assumes McDermott would be movable at $14 million if the Spurs ultimately want to.
The Spurs are stuck in the middle. Not good enough to make a deep playoff run. Not bad enough to acquire elite talent via the draft either. Imo, McDermott is an uninspiring signing. Really don't like what they are doing.
Has DeRozan re-signed? Without him they are much closer to the bottom than the middle. Still cannot fathom drafting Primo ahead of Moses Moody
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

PG: Terry Porter (90-91) / Steve Francis (00-01)
SG: Joe Dumars (92-93) / Jeff Hornacek (91-92) / Jerry Stackhouse (00-01)
SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)
PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

You're advocating we make moves similar to desperate teams...

Nope.  I’m saying that we retain a guy who is in the top 5% - 10% of shooters and scorers.
It would be incredibly disappointing if he walks for below $20m a season. Especially if it comes out that the only reason he didn't come here was because we didn't offer.

If he doesn't want to return there's not much that we can actually do, but all the reports so far have been about how we're "far apart" in terms of the monetary value.

Would be a real one-two punch after the Hayward debacle last year

Far apart means that there have been conversations.  I think he’s a $15-16 million a year guy, so I’d be disappointed if we lost him for that, but even at $18 million I’d be fine.

I’m shocked at how many fans don’t want Fournier back. One of the best spot up shooters last year and about to hit his prime.
Didn’t like the fit.  Much more comfortable with JRich as a complementary player who is a good defender and can play point.

Re: Smart. He's seeking a max extension (approximately four years, $80 million; same money the team doesn't want to pay Evan Fournier), and still faces a tough negotiation. Celtics are targeting 2022 free agency.

If Marcus Smart wants $20m a year, trade him

Uh, yeah, if we know Smart is seeking $20M, then it's time to trade him. Love the guy, but he's not worth $20M, especially given his style of play and injury history.

Per a source: The Boston Celtics are focused on keeping their cap sheet as clean as possible for 2022 free agency. Source said they are not out on Evan Fournier, but Boston and Fournier aren't close on a deal.

You guys are better at this than I am, but here goes...

I love Lowry's game, but, I think Riley is way off spending his money on Lowry.

Just don't see it as a great match and I repeat, Lowry is a top player, but don't like the "match" in Miami which is good because, Pat Riley is the enemy.

Pretty clear that's what they're doing. Only way this seems to make sense if they know Beal is coming, or perhaps have an eye on Lavine? But could we not try and work out something for him now if it's Beal?

Such a risky strategy, especially with how many of the big names are either extending now or very unlikely to leave.

I’d sign him to that.  Should be noted that $80 million includes $2.7 million in incentives, and the cap will be 7-10% higher next year, so it’s more like signing Fournier to a $72 million deal this year than an $80 million deal.

And I would absolutely keep Smart before Fournier.

EDIT: Murphy’s numbers are wrong.  Smart’s max is $77 million, $75 million guaranteed.  And again, there’s going to be a sizable cap jump next season.

Exactly.  Putting all our hopes on the Beal train doesn't seem reasonable to me.  Hopefully Brad has other plans, and other players on the list as well.  Heck we couldn't even get Horford and Gordon to resign when we thought both would be here.  I don't get the Beal obsession.  I guess it comes down to the fact that none of those other big FA's are signing with Boston.  With Beal at least him and Tatum are friends, so people attach hope to that.  But unfortunately that 'friendship' might mean absolutely zip when you are signing huge multi-million contracts.

Marcus Smart wanted $20 mm per last time he was a free agent.

I am highly confident he will not get it this time either.

I just don't think Beal is the answer to get the Celtics among the elite contenders.
He is yet another ball-dominant, scoring guard who will not facilitate ball movement, but will hinder it.

Focus on a major upgrade at center & power forward, spot-up killer shooters and a well-rounded point guard.
The Four Celtic Generals:
Russell - Cowens - Bird - Garnett

The Four Celtic Lieutenants:
Cousy - Havlicek - McHale - Pierce
