Free agent Richaun Holmes has agreed to a four-year, $90 million deal with the Dallas Mavericks, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium.

Haha, what!??

$90mil for Richaun Holmes. He is basically Theis with less smarts.

The cs have no cap, no great assets and everyone was expecting what?  Resign Fournier and wallow in mediocrecy for 3 years.  This is a bridge year.  No way to get good enough to compete with the best with the js and Evan.  The cs have 1 or 2 roster spots.  Let the youngins play and get better and establish value and see how far the js can take them.

Seems like it's been a bridge year every year.

The past few years had been Ainge stuck between collecting and developing youth and trying to contend with vets, and not doing either one properly. At least now we have a clear direction.

Yeah, backwards.

I’ll just say that if the Celtics are playing for 2022 free agency they better Edited for profanity.  Please do not do it again.ing land the big fish because if they punt this season and then lose their free agents by prioritizing someone else who doesn’t come, you can just start planning the inevitable Jays trades.

This is where I'm at.
Of course it won't be good if they don't land a big FA in 2022 if that's the plan.

What I'm wondering is why anyone would think that a .500 team would be able to add an average or above average player or 2 -- deepen their bench, and suddenly be a championship contender. They need another star and Brad, I hope, is planning to get one.
Exactly, see my post 4 spots above his one.

So...

Can the Celtics convince the Knicks to the Fournier deal as a S&T to create a new $18-19M TPE?

If not...ummmm...yeah.

Not sure why New York would help a division rival around the same level like this unless we overpay.

My sense is there's going to be a lot of anger from the fan base starting tonight.

They had to, they had 4 players.

They got my guy Ellington, which is annoying

You are vastly underestimating the depth of the homerism in Celtics fans

Yeah a lot of these contracts seem overly umm large.  but it is always that way, all of us every year say, whoa this player doesn't deserve that much and then it happens again the next year and the following year.

So yeah, Smart might not get 20 mil, but with Ball geting 21 mill, Smart won't be a long ways behind that.

They probably won't unless we send something valuable. But hey! We have #flexibility

Portis re-signs with the Bucks for 2 years, $9 million. Second year is a player option. That's an absolute bargain for the Bucks! Didn't expect him to stay tbh.

I’m shocked he settled for that deal so quickly.

He really wanted to be there.  They only had non-Bird rights, and this was the most he could get with that.  He’ll have Ealry bird rights next year for a larger deal, and this year he gets a no-trade clause plus security with an option.
They could have offered him their taxpayer MLE which starts at $5,890,000. He settled for less than that.

I have a soft spot for the Bucks cause I'm greek and they have Giannis and Thanasis. I also loved their decision to boycott a playoff game in support of the BLM movement. I follow them a lot. Portis is really happy there. The Bucks fans absolutely love him. He's like a cult hero in Wisconsin. Even so, pretty much nobody expected him to stay. He could have gotten way more money. Shams is reporting that he turned down offers from the Heat and the Mavs. Hats off to Bobby. He prioritized happiness over money.

Yeah, he settled for a million less now, but it’s a goodwill gesture that he’ll make back next year when he signs a 4-year, $50 million deal.
The Bucks will have his Early-Bird rights next year. The most they will be allowed to offer him will be 175% of his previous salary or 105% of the league-average salary in the previous season. The average salary in 2020/21 was $10 million. If he were an Early-Bird free agent this offseason, the Bucks would have been allowed to offer him up to $42 million over 4 years. I guess 4 years/$50 million sounds about right for next season. Still, I bet he could have gotten a similar deal this season if he wanted to.

Spurs spending all their money on mediocre role players. What happened to that organisation?

A reminder to our fans that “cap space” doesn’t mean much if nobody wants to play for you.

Yeah I worry about that for next year.  We throw everything into one plan to clear cap space for one year and what happens if no one wants to sign?

This is starting to feel like Danny’s masterplan for AD. We know how that ended.

There are several top tier free agents on the market next summer. If your going to go all in on clearing cap space to land one of them, next summer is the right time to do it.

This season will be all about Tatum, Brown, Stevens and Udoka selling Boston as a premier destination for those top tier free agents.

I get that, it is a packed year for free agents, but how many of the top free agents available next year will even remotely consider Boston?  I know that is a rhetorical question, but you can apply a little logic and the best tier just doesn't seem likely for us, except maybe Beal.  So it kind of comes down to Brad / FO going all in for one FA that we don't even know if he would like to be here.

Curry - No, just reupped with GS off the market
KD - After not going with us last time, it is incredibly unlikely that he comes here now
Harden - highly doubtful
Doncic - Dallas will give him whatever he wants to stay
Kyrie - haha....not happening
Beal - literally the only top tier reasonable chance
Jimmy Butler - reupped with Miami off the market

So yeah it was a big list that is getting smaller, and the number of players that might actively consider Boston was small to begin with.

Exactly. The only reasonable ones that I can tell are Beal and Lavine, both of which I could easily see be off the market before then with extensions or committing to stay where they're at. Just don't see this as a great strategy, especially when it comes at the expense of a year of our young guys' contract that may be remembered down the line when it's time to re-up with us.

I wasn't crazy about EF, but seeing how things have went contract wise, if the C's had a chance to retain him in the 17-18mil a year range, it feels like it might have been a mistake not to do that.  If EF has a good year next year that 17 mil will seem like a major bargain, and that contract would have been really movable in a larger trade if you do find some all star to bite in free agency.
I’ve never been of the philosophy “sign him, you can always trade him”. It’s not that easy.  I look at it this way:  Is Tatum/Brown/Fournier a “big-3” championship core with Smart and Horford the other 2 starters?  I say no.

I say no too!

I think that starting tonight, fans are going to realize how poor a job Ainge actually did since drafting Tatum. But at least we still have Grant Williams.
