Keith Smith: Neemias Queta helped lead Portugal to a big win over Spain today: 16 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals. Aday Mara was strong for Spain with 12 points, 6 rebounds and 4 blocks. Hugo Gonzalez had a rough game with just 3 points on 1-for-4 shooting (all from three).

5 will be the position to watch early this season. Looking forward to Q-MR production on both ends with Q picking up his offense. Wonder if his points were all at the rim.

These two were. Smoked Mara.  :D

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

Thanks.  Handles look pretty good against lesser competition.  Also looks a little slimmer; maybe quicker.  What do we have ultimately in Queta?  I don?t think we know.

What Queta lacks is shooting touch and bigs usually don't develop shooting touch at age 27.  But Queta surprised me last season with how much he developed so maybe he will surprise again.

I think Queta could develop a midrange shot, but it does not seem like that is what the team wants from him. Q is a career 71% from the FT line. He has a good shooting form.

Queta just needs something reliable to keep defenses honest. If he could develop to say Jarrett Allen level, that would be a big plus.  I see that as possible but it is a lot of development to expect at this point.

Thought Hugo would be putting up some good numbers in these games. Sounds like he has been struggling.

Keith Smith: Aday Mara had 15 points, 13 rebounds and 1 block as Spain lost to Greece today. Sergia De Larrea had 9 points. Baba Miller had 4 points and 5 rebounds. Hugo Gonzalez had 4 points, 3 rebounds and 1 block.

Seems like he is hitting a rookie/sophomore wall or something.  I still have faith.  He is very young still.  He will get through this.

I want Hugo to do well.   But folks he was a late round pick and has been hyped ad nauseam.   I do think the fan base has over rated him.  His defense is very good and his movement is solid.   He needs to become more consistent at every aspect of his offensive game.

I mean it depends on what we're hyped about.

I'm hyped about him being a supersized version of Alex Caruso or Josh Hart. I'm hyped about him being a winning basketball player that makes plays. I'm hyped to have another guy in the rotation come playoff time that won't be overwhelmed by the moment.

I'm not thinking that he's going to be a 25ppg scorer, or will replace Brown's iso game, or anything like that.

Think Hugo has All-Defense potential on the defensive end.  I'm not sure where he'll settle offensively when all is said & done but he's a future starter in this league and going to be an asset for this team.

Completely agree. People are calling for him to start this season. That?s crazy to me. I?m not saying Hugo doesn?t have potential, but he is still very raw.
