Jimmy Butler opts out.

Lakers interested. I think Butler and James deserve each other.

Philadelphia could be in a tougher spot than Boston. Losing Butler, Harris, maybe Reddick and all the assets used to get Butler and Harris.

Question: Could Butler sign a 1 plus 1 with the Lakers, or another multi year contract with the Lakers, in which he can opt out after the first year, AND the Lakers still retain his Bird rights if he opts out?

The reason I ask this is if the Lakers lose out on the AD trade, but want to clear cap space for him when he becomes FA next year, could Butler play along and do this, knowing that the Lakers will just re-sign him to max with his bird rights.

I can't believe the CBA would allow this, can someone opine?

Thanks!!

You don't get bird rights till you have been on your current team for 3 years.

So he won't have any bird rights until 3 years on the lakers, he doesn't need to be on the same contract for that however. There are early-bird rights which allow him to get a 175% raise over his current contract. This is what LBJ did with Cleveland as he was at the max. Early Bird rights generate a cap hold just like Bird Rights do, so to retain cap space they'd need to renounce his early bird rights.

So Jimmy would just be onto a new team in your scenario, which is why it cannot happen.

The #Celtics  are turning their attention away from re-signing Kyrie Irving and toward acquiring Anthony Davis.

“He and I share that outlook and have over the 16 years we’ve worked together,” said Grousbeck. “I don’t have any interest in being mediocre for the next 10 or 15 years. I’d rather go for it, hit the driver, off the fairway, I occasionally do that. Absolutely that Kyrie trade felt like the right thing to do and was the right thing to do. I completely share Danny’s outlook and support it, of looking at options that are aggressive and could lead to a championship. That’s the mindset.”

This is why I think they're gonna do what it takes to trade for AD.

Yeah, I was going to start a thread on this once we had an indication about the destinations Butler/Harris. I wouldn't say the packages the gave up were 'massive' - Covington/Saric and Shamet/Chandler/Muscala/MIA 1st/PHI 1st - but it would definitely set them back.

We are all worried about losing Crowder and Sexton for a player who is about to walk - me included - but at least we had that player for two full seasons at an All-NBA level. Harris looks like he may stay and he seems like a good fit, but Butler seems to have one foot out the door already.

And personally, if we trade for AD, I will be praying to the highest of heavens that Butler signs for the max in LAL; one suitor will then be out of the race. We will then have to find a way to sabotage NYK...or they may just do it themselves.

fireworks!    he says this **** every year.

If the summer of 2017 wasn't fireworks, I don't know what was. Traded #1 for #3/SAC pick, signed Hayward, and traded for Kyrie. That was edge of your seat excitement throughout the summer.

Also, can't ignore the Horford signing the summer before.

The Cs may not be the team you want them to be today, but DA and company don't just sit around on their hands and hope for the best (except for this past trade deadline, I guess).

I disagree with the bolded statement.  Two full NBA seasons at that level implies that the playoffs are included.  He missed a bunch of games in 2018 with his knee injuries and missed the entire 2018 postseason.  In 2019, we got one good series out of him before he played with either total apathy or just downright poorly.  I don't know if he can turn it around, but he was certainly far from the killer instinct that I can recall from Cleveland.  I remember a playoff game in the ECF when Lebron sat down with foul trouble (amazingly) and Kyrie came in and single-handedly put the game out of reach.  Where was that Kyrie for the Celtics?

Okay - rant over.

#NBA Celtics - The framework that Danny Ainge has offered the Pelicans (player wise) is Jayson Tatum, Marcus Smart, G. Yabusele, and Robert Williams for Anthony Davis. David Griffin is using the Lakers for “leeway” to receive more draft picks in any deal from Boston.

If that’s true - he’s probably trying to get the Memphis pick out of this, as well. Can’t imagine that he’ll get it though, as that’s a lot to risk.
