Also, here's a question. Since we can't trade for Davis until after the draft, but say we came to an agreement prior and drafted the players they wanted, would those drafted players' salaries count towards matching purposes now that they are no longer draft picks? If so, that could mean we could possibly keep Smart, correct?

They can’t be traded until 30 days after they sign their contract, but otherwise yes.

We may have as few as two first rounders (and as many as four) so the projected outgoing salary varies wildly.

In terms of how those salaries could factor in, here’s a post I made awhile ago, with some pick projections that are currently out of date:

Quote
Tatum:  $7.8 million

11th:  $2.8 million
15th:  $2.3 million
20th:  $1.8 million
25th:  $1.5 million

Total:  $8.4 million

Combined, that's $16.4 million.

Throw in Yabu.  That's another $3.1 million.

So, $19.5 million.  Throw in Williams.  That gets us to $21.4 million.

So, with some variance on the draft picks, we can probably get to where we need to be [$21.6 million]

Under those circumstances, we could get away without including Smart or Jaylen.  But, that’s very unlikely.

You're using 2019 rookie scale here instead of 2020.  Plus you didn't gross them up to 120%.   The rookies are actually worth more.  The sun keeps shining here!

Sweet. So, easy peasey.

There's a report that Lonzo would prefer going to CHI or NYK (or a 3rd team) if moved in a deal for Davis. Not a good sign for LAL if the Pelicans assume Lonzo doesn't want to be a Pelican and they want him in the package. They'll have to offer way more then. LaVar is making his moves. Maybe like during the Leonard saga last summer, the Lonzo injury came with a purpose (avoid getting dealt)  :P

If that's all they want why isn't the deal done yet?

Because regardless what all these media folks tell you, it doesn't seem the Pelicans are motivated to deal AD before the deadline, and especially not to the Lakers. I trust their PR statement and their annoyance about the "tampering" w/Rich Paul and Lebron than what folks like Sheridan and Haynes say.

According to the article "it is believed" that they're targeting those players.  According to another article Demps isn't picking up his phone.

Don’t read too much into it. I suspect it means they might just shut him down, Keith Bogans style.

The full quote is a little more enlightening. After stating that this was a hard thing to answer, Gentry stated that he assumes AD will play with them again.

Also, players that think they will be traded within the next week aren't usually out on the bench during games like this. The fact that AD is still hanging around the team and going to games suggests that he realizes that he won't be traded this season and will still have the rest of the season around these guys, thus wanting to still keep a good relationship with the team as much as possible.

Do not want Anthony Davis if he does not want to be a Celtic.

I certainly don't want to lose our homegrown, very good players who seem to appreciate playing in Boston, for a guy who is going to leave after one year. Sure, maybe he changes his mind once he experiences a season with the Celts, like Paul George did with OKC. But I don't want to take that risk and lose all the great progress of this rebuild and give away players who could stay here most or all of their career.

KG didn't really want to be a Celtic at first. George didn't want to be on the Thunder at first. There are a giant amount more examples of guys that at first didn't want to be on a team but then did. No big deal, imo

Big difference. Garnett may have had concerns, but in the end, he waived his no trade clause, which indicated much more of a committment. He did not send out info thru back channels, or arrange his announcement to facilitate going to the Lakers. Leonard recently bought a huge home in LA, as well.

Paul George is the exception. Like I stated - it's possible Davis could spend a season in Boston and decide he likes it - but that is a huge risk to take given his current intentions and the fact that he signed on with Lebron's management empire. Not worth losing these players we worked so hard to acquire.

the thing with Davis is Kyrie  is his best friend. They've wanted to play together. I guarantee ainge has been told this by Kyrie. You get davis Kyrie stays 100%. Kyrie probably talks Davis into staying

Frankly ....NOT to go all in on a trade to land him is really unthinkable .

This type of opportunity to pair Irving with AD ....two talents like this might not hook up in Boston again for 50 years .

This happens in Faker land alot ....they expect it . Rare Rare chance to do something really historic .

We gotta be like the Raps with Kawhi ,  you gotta go for it or settle for second place .

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2818493-anthony-davis-trade-rumors-pelicans-have-no-interest-in-lakers-deal-right-now

Quote
The New Orleans Pelicans have no interest in trading five-time All-Star center Anthony Davis to the Los Angeles Lakers at the moment, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, who said as much on NBA Countdown Wednesday (h/t The Render and SLAM).

The 25-year-old Davis, who is averaging 29.3 points, 13.3 rebounds and 2.6 blocks this season, has formally requested a trade. He's been connected with the Lakers, to the point where Dave McMenamin of ESPN wrote that a source told him the "speculation is 'weighing heavily' on several of [the Lakers' young players]."

Wojnarowski previously reported that the Pels "won't make a deal before [the February 7] NBA trade deadline unless they're offered an overwhelming package." These latest comments seem to partially confirm that notion, especially with the Lakers standing as one of the most obvious trading partners for the Pels.

For all the naysayers and negative Nancies out there, maybe this will settle you down for a bit.

It was obvious from the get-go with all of these "rumors" that Rich Paul and the rest of them were doing everything they could to get AD before the trade deadline. Well, obviously that didn't sit too well with NOLA, who looks like they will spitefully refuse to deal with LA at this point. (Not that they should anyways with Boston's looming offer this summer.)
