The Celtics using the DPE on Monroe, thus freeing the team to trade Baynes as a mid-sized expiring makes a lot of sense...

Interesting............

This is interesting.

Let’s say we also trade for Tyreke using a 1st and filler, we could expand a Baynes trade to a Baynes/Morris/Smart trade which would give us outgoing salaries of about $14M combined. I wonder who we could pursue with that. It would likelly have to be a swing or a big with Baynes/Morris outgoing.

This isn’t necessarily realistic,  but it just goes to show how much Ainge has to work with.

I am also not ready to give up on Hayward.

Saw this yesterday, but I don’t think it has a lot of legs.  Baynes and Monroe have different skillets, and the minutes for Monroe could come partly from Baynes, partly from Horford, and partly from Theis.  With only three functional bigs (sorry Yabu), it’s a thin frontcourt.

Yeah, I hate to give up Baynes even if he does (possibly) become the odd man out.. Getting Horford more rest down the stretch would be an added benefit of holding on to him as well as injury insurance (for any big other than Horford - we aren’t going anywhere with an injured Horford).

I suppose the Morris/Smart for Mirotic trade would still be on the table, but we would be giving up two major rotation pieces and the opportunity to pick up Mirotic’s option next year.

EDIT: never mind - the Pels did decide to go through with the Mirotic deal. TP SL for all of your helpful info in that thread!

Welp, there goes two potential bigs for us to upgrade with. Sucks. Still hoping for something like Noel and Reke/Williams, though, especially one of the latter two for scoring.
Recovering Joe Skeptic, but inching towards a relapse.

Were we ever in the mix for Niko? I'm still not 100% sold on the implications of signing Greg. If anything, NO adding another big hurts his playing time, no?

My thoughts...as well as he wants to win and NO isn't going to do anything in the west

This is FANTASTIC news! With this trade, there goes Monroe's playing time in New Orleans. Could this be New Orleans response after Monroe told them he is going to Boston instead? I don't see why New Orleans makes this move if Monroe is still a legitimate possibility for them.

I guess we will see what happens, but I agree with others that I don’t see why Monroe would find NO more attractive than BOS at this point. Less money, less playing time. I guess if he really wants to go home, there is nothing you can really do, but we now have to be in the driver’s seat.

I see mirotic. Who’s the other big and where’s confirmation of deal

Man N.O. got out from Asik and picked up Mirotic for a 1st.  Like that deal for them.  Bulls saddled with Asik, but pick up another 1st.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

Monroe. This trade opens up room and a spot for Monroe, which is probably the main reason they ended up going through with this deal now after falling apart the first time.

Has it been confirmed?

I think they went through with it to get Niko mainly. They really wanted him and decided to pony up the 12 mil guarantee....I think they make a run at Monroe but not sure why he would buy into NO

Isn't Mirotic worth holding out for? We need to keep those driving lanes open. Mirotic keeps space open and can hit from deep. Monroe's nice but does he fit our system? Could be a wasted spot.

No.

Especially since I imagine he will be traded.  There is an interest out there for him.

There is interest, but he can veto a trade and has already done so.  He can’t veto a trade if the Bulls/the team acquiring him pick up his $12.5 million option next season.  It’s not clear that a team wants to do this.

But if you are the Bulls, can't you also wait till next offseason and move him then?

Only if they pick up the team option.  And given that right now teams don’t seem to want that option picked up, they might not have any more luck next summer.  And they do want to make a real run at a free agent or two, so they don’t want to get got holding his deal.

And given that Mirotic can tell teams don’t want his option, it gives him an idea on his market value next year, which is all the more reason for him to try to hold out to get it picked up.
Frankly, I think I'm ok with Boston picking up his option next year.  Mirotic is the exact type of PF this team could use offensively.  The team is missing someone in that KO role and that is Mirotic.  The problem of course is trying to come up with a good salary mix going out.  Morris and Smart works, but that is too much to give up from a value standpoint (though adding Jerian Grant makes it closer - though that adds close to 5 million in salary to Boston this year).  Morris, Nader, and Larkin works, but I think Chicago would want more than that (and I'm not sure Boston wants to add 5 million in salary this year especially with the DPE still out there).

Boston still has the DPE to use as well.  So say the first trade is done and Boston signs Monroe for at least part of the DPE

PG - Irving, Grant
SG - Brown, Rozier
SF - Tatum, Ojeleye
PF - Horford, Mirotic
C - Monroe, Baynes

That is a pretty nice 9 to 10 man rotation.
Yeah pretty nice...I guess, but I don't want "pretty nice", I want BANNER #18.  I just don't see  how adding Grant, Mirotic and Monroe while losing Smart (I assume you let him walk) gets them to the next level.
what moves are you making this year that are yielding Banner 18?
Maybe none, and target next season for the chip.  Hayward comes back and Smart re-signed.  That's your additional shooter and maintain good defense.  Still need another big man who could be Monroe though I don't think he is ideal.

They're still restricted to the vet minimum. Nothing's changed for them on the Greg front except they cleared the roster spot.

The timing with the Monroe release is unfortunate.  He's an option but may not be the best option.  I'd hate for the C's to settle but there is no G/T that someone else will become available.  I'd rather have a Favors then Monroe but doubtful Utah would help the C's unless they paid a major price.  Tyreke Evans is my preferred choice because he can score on the 2nd unit with Morris.  He'd help rebounding at the guard position but the C's get killed by teams like NY on the Glass with their bigs.  The C's need someone who can handle those types of players and I don't think that Monroe can.  How much will he hurt the C's D?  Will Horford cover him up?  Very tough situation because if the C's do not get anyone I will be highly disappointed.
