Isn't Mirotic worth holding out for? We need to keep those driving lanes open. Mirotic keeps space open and can hit from deep. Monroe's nice but does he fit our system? Could be a wasted spot.

Pelicans are front runner

There is strong early, mutual interest between the Pelican and Greg Monroe, source tells @YahooSports. Monroe is a New Orleans native and Pels can offer significant playing time with Cousins out.

Makes sense for Monroe if he values playing time above all else.  As for a future contract, he will need to have a major impact on the Pelicans to secure anything beyond the mid-level exception.

If I were Monroe I would strongly consider Boston.  It might be his only opportunity to play decent minutes on a team that has the potential to reach the NBA Finals.

They can offer less than $3 million, though, so I don’t think it’s a slam dunk. Plus, New Orleans is a hot mess of a franchise.

They can’t even offer $3 million if they don’t make a trade.  They’re barely a million under the hard cap because of a lot of incentives they have in contracts, and unlikely incentives count towards the hard cap.

He's playing for next year's contract. Anything he makes this year is gravy after the buyout.

I mean, only to a point.  He’s unlikely to get more than the MLE next year unless he signs a 1-year deal with a team who’s just saving cap space for 2019 (like the Sixers did this year with Amir and Redick).  He’s got enough of a body of work that 2 months of an extra 5-10 minutes a game aren’t going to impact that opinion much.  So if he gets an extra $7 million now, that could easily offset what he might not get in free agency.

Am I right in thinking the ONLY way we don't get him is if he prefers to go to a ANOTHER contender (or, I guess a non-contender) for the vet min?

Fixed it for you. ;D

I've been beating the Mirotic drum for a while now. Looks like he wants an extension, heard that's why NO deal fell through, and Utah supposedly wants him.

He makes 12.5 mil though. Not sure if we can combine salaries with our dpe

That seems like crazy $, but I guess this is the new NBA
Truuuuuuuuuth!

No.

Especially since I imagine he will be traded.  There is an interest out there for him.

There is interest, but he can veto a trade and has already done so.  He can’t veto a trade if the Bulls/the team acquiring him pick up his $12.5 million option next season.  It’s not clear that a team wants to do this.

But if you are the Bulls, can't you also wait till next offseason and move him then?

Only if they pick up the team option.  And given that right now teams don’t seem to want that option picked up, they might not have any more luck next summer.  And they do want to make a real run at a free agent or two, so they don’t want to get got holding his deal.

And given that Mirotic can tell teams don’t want his option, it gives him an idea on his market value next year, which is all the more reason for him to try to hold out to get it picked up.

Frankly, I think I'm ok with Boston picking up his option next year.  Mirotic is the exact type of PF this team could use offensively.  The team is missing someone in that KO role and that is Mirotic.  The problem of course is trying to come up with a good salary mix going out.  Morris and Smart works, but that is too much to give up from a value standpoint (though adding Jerian Grant makes it closer - though that adds close to 5 million in salary to Boston this year).  Morris, Nader, and Larkin works, but I think Chicago would want more than that (and I'm not sure Boston wants to add 5 million in salary this year especially with the DPE still out there).

Boston still has the DPE to use as well.  So say the first trade is done and Boston signs Monroe for at least part of the DPE

PG - Irving, Grant
SG - Brown, Rozier
SF - Tatum, Ojeleye
PF - Horford, Mirotic
C - Monroe, Baynes

That is a pretty nice 9 to 10 man rotation.

Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

no money though and how much PT does Monroe need.  Everyone in the league knows what Monroe is.  In fact, he might increase his value more if he comes to a place like Boston and becomes a sort of super sub type player.
