Woj updated his article, it revolves around the Celtics now https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/958907611579142144

Center Greg Monroe has agreed to a contract buyout with the Phoenix Suns, clearing the way for him to become an unrestricted free agent, league sources told ESPN.

The Celtics will be one of several contending teams with an interest in signing Monroe, league sources said. Boston can use part of its $8.4 million disabled player exception gained after the Gordon Hayward injury to sign Monroe.

I wonder if its possible for danny  to split  the DPE ... To hoping another waiver wire cut can come? Give monroe $5 mill and save $3.4 mill incase another person gets cut

Imagine if noel gets cut and we can nab noel as well with the remaining dpe amount. We would be almost unstoppable

No, we can’t split the DPE.

I'm all in on Monroe with the DPE.  I believe that 20 MPG in Brad's system would accentuate our identity as an elite defensive and rebounding group.  We were far and away the best in the NBA in both of these areas for the first month of the season.  Monroe would ensure continuity off the bench, especially on the glass.

At face value he is a mediocre defender but I believe Brad can cover this up by finding ideal match-ups on a nightly basis.  The real question is can Monroe make a difference in a couple of big playoff games?  The answer is yes IMO.

Pro's:

Excellent interior scorer
Elite on the glass (especially offensive boards)
Major difference maker in playoff wins against the Raptors last season

Cons:

Zero rim protection on defense
Hurts floor spacing on offense
Liability as pick and roll defender

The downside to this move is that we don't improve our wing scoring.  My biggest concern right now is that our team cannot win against elite competition unless our defense is playing at a championship level.  Can we win more than one way against elite competition in the playoffs?

I think it is a good idea.   He fills a couple of roles.

He is an offensive capable player to come off the bench.  This helps the Celtics biggest weakness.

He has a legitimate big man size that can help the Celtics defense against the bigger teams.  While I believe the Celtics would still beat these teams (76ers, Miami...) in the playoffs, having the extra size could make it easier on the Celtics and on Horford's health through the playoffs.

He can grab rebounds.  Can never have enough of those.

He is a vet.

And finally, he only costs the injury exception.

I like Baynes but he struggles to finish around the rim, often gets outworked for rebounds and can struggle on defense.

Monroe would be better under Stevens
There are multiple negative comments in this thread about Baynes.  While he has his limitations, I really don't see his defense as a major liability and in fact I would argue he is a better defender than Monroe.

While I'm not against bring in Monroe, I don't think he replaces Baynes.  CBS has demonstrated he will go with the best matchups and he reacts quickly to rotation moves made by the other coach.  Monroe would simply give him another weapon on offense and rebounding, but does essentially nothing for our defense.  Monroe and Baynes can co-exist.

Monroe is so far off from the profile of a typical Danny player that I'd be surprised if we brought him in, but he's talented and there are only so many realistic DPE options.

I suspect Danny won't be in a hurry to cash in his "outbid other contenders" chip but curious to see how it plays out.

Is there a typical Danny player?  Monroe certainly doesn’t seem far off of Jared Sullinger with better work ethic.

That said, my primary buyout hope is Mirotic.  That’s probably coming February 9th.

I'd like Mirotic too, but it seems more like that he gets traded, doesn't it?

On the flip side, I don't see another player who is as good that will be bought out.

I don’t think he does.  He’s only getting traded if a team picks up his option for next year — that’s why the deal to New Orleans was scuttled.  Not sure there’s a team that wants to add $12.5 million next year, given how tight most payrolls are.

I couldn't agree more.  Baynes is clearly a better defender.  Monroe is far superior as a scorer and offensive rebounder.  They each would serve different purposes and Brad would have no problems making them co-exist.

I view a potential Monroe addition in terms of ability to help us win a big playoff game or two.  There's no doubt in my mind that he could/would have a 5+ minute stretch that extended a lead or brought us back in an important game.  I watched most of the Raptors vs Bucks series last season and Monroe had multiple dominant bursts where he scored on 3+ possessions in a row.  The luxury for Brad is that Monroe doesn't need to play in situations where he unable to impact the game.

It's not one fixed type but it almost invariably involves being good at spacing and/or defense, and Monroe is neither (though I think his D is underrated). Crashing the boards and post scoring are two things he doesn't seem to value much.

Thinking on it more, though, Monroe has sometimes showed one thing Danny seems to like in bigs - a decent passing touch. Maybe we could see him as a mini-Horford for the bench units.

Pelicans are front runner

There is strong early, mutual interest between the Pelican and Greg Monroe, source tells @YahooSports. Monroe is a New Orleans native and Pels can offer significant playing time with Cousins out.

I was honestly never super excited about Monroe. I prefer noel

They can offer less than $3 million, though, so I don’t think it’s a slam dunk. Plus, New Orleans is a hot mess of a franchise.
