I'm definitely not emotionally ready to be rooting for the Nets to win this season if the trade goes through.

Just don't feel like Thomas having to return helps this team. It will be very hard for him to reach last year's levels

If Cleveland is really worried about paying IT in case he doesn't play, they should just trade him into a team's cap space now. I'm sure a team like the Nets would volunteer to take the salary hit in exchange for the chance he plays for them.

No matter what though they don't need to clear salary now to avoid the tax, just before the end of the season.  I could see maybe making something conditional on IT not playing before the deadline (although that just gives Cleveland incentive not to play Thomas, which would be bad). I'm not a fan if giving up any more assets in the deal short of IT missing the whole year, though
I'm bitter.

A few days ago I was reading that the Nets pick wasn't that special, and would most likely be around #7.

Now, it's perhaps the best single asset in the NBA.  It's hands down better than Phoenix's pick, for instance.

Which is it? The value shouldn't change based upon whether Cleveland or Boston has the pick.

The reported trade with PHX was Bledsoe, Bender, and the Heat pick (not PHX pick).

And, yeah, if the trade goes through, we will hope for the worst possible outcome regarding the BKN pick; if it is voided, well, it is going to be #1...obviously  ;)

Edit: TPs to Faf and Moranis for beating me on the 1st point.
I credit my posting it without googling anything to try and confirm what was reported.  ;)

Man looking over the various deals offered for Irving, not great for the most part. I wonder what the final offers would be if the C's deal fall through we clearly stepped up and offered a good package compared to those.

I feel bad for them at this point, it'll be fun for a change rooting for them to win and rooting against Cleveland's interests -- and I feel much, much better rooting against the Lakers! Ainge is a genius if this trade goes through.

This article has what appears to be the most sensible and accurate explanation of the whole issue. It really sounds like neither team is angry, both want to go ahead with the trade. Clevelands doctors belive IT will likely miss most of the season, and since his salary puts them into luxury tax they don't want to pay that for a guy who doesn't even play this season. They want a future first to be able to package it with Shumpert to clear his 10 million off their books and also open a roster spot. Sounds fair to me.

http://www.basketballinsiders.com/nba-am-what-is-next-for-the-celtics-and-cavs/

after the fact they realize they are over the luxury tax threshold and could benefit from an extra pick to help move shump?
Should have addressed that before terms were agreed

TP

Their tax issues are NOT our problem. We are NOT a charity.

Don't give an inch, Danny!

As has been mentioned, they are already saving a bunch of money on this deal. If it falls through and Kyrie won't waive his trade kicker to another team, they will need to take on even more money in contracts than they are now...and the top asset they receive will not be the caliber of the BKN pick.

I understand why people think Cleveland has Boston over a barrel because of IT/Crowder, but if this really is about money and potential, Cleveland doesn't have an option even close to ours.

I also don't see why people keep saying it seems 'fair' to give Cleveland an additional 1st so they can off-load Shumpert. That seems ludicrous given lines of communication have been reportedly open from the start regarding IT's hip.

Also, we're not just worried about making this trade fair.  We should be aware of how much we try and help Cleveland get better.

If Danny offers up even a late first rounder, and they're able to use that to trade Shumpert for another key piece to a Finals run, well that's not good.

Stand your ground, Danny.

Now we know why Ainge signed Larkin.

I think Rozier is ready to make an impact anyway.

Bledsoe is so overvalued in this league. Bender is inching closer to bust status and the Heat pick will be very low because they should be a playoff team. That is a poor deal.

It changes based upon who is making the evaluation.....just like the assessment of IT's hip.

I'm not sure the value changed, but the pick from Phoenix that was actually offered was Miami's 1st not Phoenix's.  If Phoenix had offered their own 1st plus Bledsoe and Bender, that trade might have already been completed because even with Irving that team isn't making the playoffs and Bender still has to be considered at least a decent level of prospect himself.

Right.  We're the only team that reportedly offered a high draft pick, but we're not the only team that has one.

For many, it seems like the value of the BRK pick changes depending upon whether we've traded it or not. It's just funny to watch. Players get better when Danny acquires them, and worse when Danny trades them.

While I do HATE the trade, I truthfully do think the Lakers Pick will end up better.

Main difference is the West is A LOT harder than the East now, so even with the Nets being bad, they should get some extra wins this season.

Still, my guess is, in the West, the Lakers are the 2nd worst team in the conference (Kings worst), and in the East, Nets are a 12 seed with Hawks, Bulls, and Knicks as worse (assuming Melo is traded of course).

So of course, Nets Pick could still land Top-5, but I honestly doubt it's a Top-3 pick. Lakers Pick has a good shot at being 2-5 (which is great for us).

But yeah, still sucks to lose Nets Pick assuming this trade does go through, especially for a guy who didn't even have a better season than Isaiah last year and there's understandably questions on whether he can be an alpha who can lead a team far in playoffs (b/c with Isaiah, I saw him lead us to the ECF despite all the doubters).

Wow, this thread is nearly 45 pages and has been read ~20K times in under 5 days (I believe).

That must at least be close to an all time record. Less than 18 hours to go until we (hopefully) get a decision and can finally move on. Like I've said elsewhere, I don't think we should have to add anything else, but IMO it's worth throwing in a top 20-25 protected 1st rounder to push this through.

You should check out the "Gordon Hayward Watch Thread", over 120+ Pages I believe and at a few points during the FA decision-drama, there were over 500+ people viewing the same thread LOL. Lots of "connection problems" and lagging, but a pretty fun time!  8)

All the drama this offseason has been a joyride. Nobody could've asked for more nerve-wracking fun as a fan in the summertime.
