Only on CelticsBlog would a reigning 2x all-star, All-NBA, 29PPG scorer be a throw-in.
Considering his injury and contract situation, it's pretty obvious conclusion. Of course, if you're only interested in the Celtics in passing, this might not be the case.

This is a silly take considering the deal is in limbo because of IT's injury status.

I'm curious what others think about this theory:

In the negotiating room, Ainge offered less for Irving but when Koby Altman saw IT's medical situation, he wanted more compensation because IT wasn't going to be 100% and may still miss part of the season. Ainge relented, giving up the Net's pick, as opposed to something like the C's 2018 1st to get the deal done. This is why the initial deal looked like an overpay to many (many Celtic fans especially).

Altman agreed and when he came back to Cavs ownership saying, "Look at everything I got for Kyrie," they liked the deal just as basically everyone liked the deal for the Cavs. Then ownership found out about Isaiah's health and said, "Wait, if he's not healthy, we should get more from the Celtics," thinking this was new information for everyone, even though it wasn't.

So now the Cavs are asking for the Celtics to pay an "injured Isaiah" tax that they've actually already paid because the Cavs ownership didn't realize that was part of the initial deal and got too comfortable with the idea that this package is just what Kyrie is worth, when in reality, the precarious situation of Kyrie's trade demand has decreased his value and Cavs ownership doesn't want to believe that.

Crazy?

Yes, crazy, because ownership has to sign off on the trade prior to the physical exam.

This is all about some alternate medical opinion from the Cavs staff, that Cleveland is stupidly trying to use for leverage to extort another pick from Boston.

If they think IT needs surgery then they should rescind the trade.

(update) The cavs are still discussing whether or not to ask Danny for more. I'm willing to bet they don't want Danny to call their bluff and pull the offer. Noob GM doesn't know how to complete a  faithful trade https://articles.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2017/08/while_cavaliers_deliberate_on.amp

Vardon from cleveland.com:
The Cavs are still mulling whether to ask Boston for something else besides Isaiah Thomas, Crowder, Ante Zizic, and Brooklyn's No. 1 pick for Irving because of Thomas' injured right hip that could keep him out an extended period of time this season.

As of Monday afternoon, two sources told cleveland.com that there was nothing new to report on those deliberations, with one source saying the Celtics were still waiting to hear what (if anything) extra the Cavs wanted for Irving.

Cleveland could accept the deal as it was originally constructed, ask Boston for more -- such as another young player like second-year man Jaylen Brown or rookie Jayson Tatum -- or for an additional draft pick. A league source expected the Celtics to resist the Cavs' request, especially for a significant piece like Brown or Tatum, unless "Danny Ainge feels like (the Celtics') doctors ruined Thomas."

The source expected the trade to ultimately be completed because of the value of the Brooklyn pick -- a potential lottery selection -- and Crowder's versatility as a defender and his team-friendly contract. Crowder has three years left on his deal worth $6.8 million, $7.3 million, and $7.8 million, respectively.

Training camp starts in one month, and onlookers believe the Cavs don't want to have to try and trade Irving again, while Boston would be left without a reliable point guard if Cleveland voids the deal.

Whoa, it's not letting me post a pic from my phone or desktop, in .jpeg or in .png, but I just got a Chinese food (Red's favorite) fortune with Kyrie's Boston # first, IT's # second, and #28 third which seems like the order of the 1st rounder the C's might get with Kyrie, and the pick they might throw in here.

The fact that Kyrie's # is first, and IT's # is right after... I'm taking this as a good sign...

EDIT - Here it is: https://ibb.co/iZFtrk

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
sounds like Woj has made this up all along to keep the clickbait coming during the NBA's quietest time of the year.

It will get ESPN's clicks way up over this time last year.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Chris Haynes joins Early Edition to discuss the Irving-IT trade, and says he wouldn't be surprised if this was Cleveland's plan the whole time.

Yeah, teams will be lining up to make deals with Cleveland if this is the case.

'Hey, come trade with us. We will threaten to void a deal and hold it up for days unless you give us more. In addition, we will make the player(s) you are sending us absolutely hate and resent you if we actually follow through on the void.'

Great tactics!

The new Cavs "GM" will be lucky if he's there a year...

Because no one seems to know anything. I think the Cavs are just quietly working the phones to see if there's anything else out there. They are just keeping their options open atm. They have time..

They also save a lot of $ with decreased tax penalties.

Probably a decent sign.  I would think this means both sides are working to resolve.
