Couldn't this mean the Bulls want Kris Dunn?

Yes but more likely that they want to put Dunn alongside J.Butler rather than replace J.Butler.

Unfortunately, they do not have anything else valuable enough worth trading for.

Tough to guess what the Bulls motive is here. As has been already mentioned, they may be either clearing the path for Butler to lead the rebuild, or this may be the first step in the teardown.

The fact that they acquired significant long term money in Lopez and Calderon tends to push me towards the former IMO.

Wow.

I think free agents will take another look at the Knicks this offseason.

Maybe. But Rose is still made of glass and Melo is still a black hole on offense.

Rose is a shadow of his former self even when healthy, and Melo is yet another year older. Maybe if Phil Jackson can move Porzingis for an all-star in his prime, but I just don't see it.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
Bulls' Gar Forman just called the trade the "first step" to becoming younger and more athletic.  Many ways to interpret that, but a "first step" to getting younger might mean a tear-down is possible.

I guess the next question is just how young they want to get.   Trading Butler to make a strike in this year's draft gets them real young.   And, probably, real bad.

For a loaded draft next year.. It makes sense.

This makes a LOT of sense - they would essentially be getting two high lottery picks (Dunn and '17) plus Bradley for Butler. The reason being if they keep Butler, they will only get a back end of the lottery pick which isn't useless, but isn't what you bank your future on either.

Now's the time, the Bulls would just be putting off the inevitable if they kept Butler.

I actually agree with this. I don't think they have assets or cap space to sign a star to add to Butler. Plus even if they got someone like conley somehow and paired him with Butler and Lopez it is not a real contender. Seems building around Portis, a lottery pick this year, a lottery pick next year and perhaps mirotic would be the way to go. I think Noah and Gasol are as good as gone.

And literally almost EVERYONE will have cap space either this summer or next, so what makes them think that barren roster will attract anything? Add that to the fact that they don't really have many assets for trades and it makes all the sense in the world to get as much as you can for Butler to start your rebuild and build your team around Hoiberg's philosophy.

Haha my god, what a typical Knicks move.

Derek Rose is an absolute joke and a complete head case - seems like a perfect fit for the knicks lol

And there goes all chances of Butler moving this offseason. Turns out those other reports were right. The Bulls told Jimmy "we're not trading you" and they told teams "we'd rather trade D-Rose".

I mean, Forman wasn't exactly effusive in insisting that they wouldn't also trade Butler. They're just not going to do it unless it's worth their while.

Someone on the Knicks is in a hurry to do anything possible to make then relevant again. Obtaining Rose is strictly symbolic. He's so injury prone, plus he's a FA in 17.

This will get the trade dominos falling, every action has a reaction. I expect some action as far as NBA trades going forward. Plus some FA signings. Hopefully we can score a piece or two.

Butler is staying put......
Why do you say that?

Trading an expiring declining player for future assets is exactly the sort of move a team rebuilding would do. I think they will keep Butler too but who the heck knows. All depends how much they value Dunn.

The noise about trading Butler was never about him or Rose, it was about whether they were comfortable building around Butler. Rose was always on the way out given how much he's declined.
I think they made their decision to build around Butler

Like when we kept Pierce and built the championship team we had summers ago.

We build around Dunn, I guess.

It seems the reason they went after Rose was because of Durant.   ::)

Better the Knicks than the Nets.

Idk, man, Rose could have definitely helped us out by playing for Brooklyn next season ;D.
