People reading this backwards, I think.  I believe it was about Rose versus Butler.  Now that Rose is gone, it's Butler's team and he isn't going anywhere.

It'd be one thing of Butler was in his 30's, then you sell him.  But is mid 20's, do plenty of time for the Bulls to build around him.

With you on this.  I have felt for a year that making it Butler's team was always the right strategy.

Bulls' Gar Forman just called the trade the "first step" to becoming younger and more athletic.  Many ways to interpret that, but a "first step" to getting younger might mean a tear-down is possible.

I guess the next question is just how young they want to get.   Trading Butler to make a strike in this year's draft gets them real young.   And, probably, real bad.

ALL 8 draft picks this year for Butler...I'm in....They'd have plenty of Young and Athletic guys to evaluate
Larry Bird was Greater than you think.

Unfortunately this is probably true.
I could very well see the Hawks... starting Taurean Prince at the 3, who is already better than Crowder, imo.

you vs. the guy she tells you not to worry about

That is the next question indeed.  Regardless, I don't think this trade commits them to keeping or moving Butler.  They needed to move on from Rose, period, and the Knicks were by far the best option.

If I'm the Bulls, I trade Jimmy Butler. I don't think his value increases on a team in flux next year and they're not building a contender for the foreseeable future. If they like Dunn as reported, the deal with the Celtics just makes sense.

I think the opposite.  You just handed the keys to Butler.  It's his team now.

Of course, with that front office, nothing would surprise me.

Wasn't the reported rift in the Bulls' locker room between Noah and Butler? If this is Butler's team now, they'll have to trade Noah next, which means there's noone left to play with Butler.

At that point, wouldn't it be easier (and smarter) to just start over from scratch?

Noah's a FA.  He's as good as gone already.

Can't you start from scratch with Butler? Or, at least, attempt to?

IIRC, he'll be 27 before the season starts. Do they legitimately have a path to contention with what they have assets-wise before he gets too old? I'm not so sure.

Yeah agreed.  We'd all love for it to mean that the Bulls are blowing it up and fully starting over, but in reality it cements that Butler isn't going anywhere.  You need a big 3 in today's NBA to be a title contender, and Jimmy Butler is more than capable of being a part of that, so why would Chicago just move on?

Comparing them to the Cs before KG and Ray Allen got here, he's their version of Paul Pierce right now.  They have one of the 3 main pieces, now it's time to build around him.

For a loaded draft next year.. It makes sense.

Better the Knicks than the Nets.

This!

I was worried the Nets would get Rose in a contract year.
Howard and Eric Gordon are still guys I hope go anywhere but the Nets

Marks is not stupid. Bazemore, Batum Jennings are your new Net targets. Teague was traded to keep Bazemore.

Agreed. They have Butler locked in for the next 4 years at decent money (with the cap spike) and he's young enough to add pieces around. There's no need to trade him unless their getting back a king's transom.

If you do it right, you can build up assets relatively quick.    Go back to Boston circa 2005 with a 28 year old Paul Pierce.   Only took them a couple of years to build up enough from a relatively similar position.

I have no idea if they'll decide to go that direction, though.

Knicks to sign Dwight Howard to replace Robin Lopez ?

PG: D-Rose
SG: ?
SF: Melo
PF: Porzingis
 C: D-Howard

Looks a good fit to me. For both team and player.

interesting, do you think Rose is ready to return to form? new start, with Melo and Howard could benefit being there too

Why bother getting rid of Lopez just to bring in Howard who is a major headache now. Lopez was also on a good contract for his age and production.

They also break even on salary for 16-17, then 17-18 and 18-19 they are only saving 13mil a year. I guess in 17-18 they will have room for 2 max players but 1 will have to be Porzingas.
The Nets will finish with the worst record and the Celtics will end up with the 4th pick.
