3. Joe Johnson
If it feels like Joe Johnson’s name has been floated around in trade talks for the past several years now, it’s because it has. In the final year of his contract, however, this will likely be the season that the Brooklyn Nets are finally able to find a suitor for the seven-time All-Star. Even at 34, Johnson could be a valuable contributor off the bench for a contender. Johnson is a shoo-in to be traded this season.
What could they possibly get for him? Surely if he went to a contender they wouldn't want to give up much.
He's got the 2nd biggest contract in the league - he's almost impossible to move without tearing up the acquiring team's roster. And he's playing like a Boston-era Michael Finley at this point (i.e. borderline rotation player on a good team) so no one's going to want to give up any kind of rotational talent to get him.
The only way he might return some moderate value is if he was used to take on longer salary, but I believe Billy King has already ruled out that option, and even then it's hard to find a good partner. I think Thad Young and Jarrett Jack are actually the most likely Nets to be traded. Jack for somebody like Jose Calderon (a similarly washed-up guy with a better fitting skillset) and Thad for an assortment of shooting roleplayers to better feature Brook.
Anyhoo, for those of you who are geeked up for Nets-Rockets tonight but are stuck watching the C's - I'm there for you.
