Sigh, I always have to remember that, no matter how bad the Nets are, we still have to deal with our lottery curse. With our luck, the Nets will be the worst team and we'll still somehow end up with the 17th pick.

Mike

To be fair, if the Nets end up being the worst team, we can do no worse than the 4th pick. We already had a team from our division get that bad luck last year so two years in a row is unlikely.

Maybe it's still early but I don't see any real game changers in the draft besides Simmons. I know it's early but I feel like the last few years we all knew the top 3-4 guys from the start.

I'd gladly take Simmons or trade that pick (eg. Kevin Love trade) so lets go Nets!

You mean the guys who would be taken in the top 3 or 4, right?  Certainly very few seemed to know who would end up being the most valuable 3 or 4.
DKC Seventy-Sixers:

SG: C. Lee/B. Hield/T. Luwawu
SF:  Giannis/J. Lamb/M. Kuzminskas
PF:  E. Ilyasova/J. Jerebko/R. Christmas
C:    N. Vucevic/K. Olynyk/E. Davis/C. Jefferson

If it feels like Joe Johnson’s name has been floated around in trade talks for the past several years now, it’s because it has. In the final year of his contract, however, this will likely be the season that the Brooklyn Nets are finally able to find a suitor for the seven-time All-Star. Even at 34, Johnson could be a valuable contributor off the bench for a contender. Johnson is a shoo-in to be traded this season.

What could they possibly get for him? Surely if he went to a contender they wouldn't want to give up much.

Other than us being in the lottery, that's about as good as it gets!

Yeah, I know, we've just had such rotten luck at the lottery that I figured we'll find a way.

Agree with you, though. I feel the same way about Simmons. Skal, Ingram and Brown all look like possibilities, and I say that with the full authority of the 12 minute scouting videos that I've seen on each. ;)

Mike

I know even less than you having not seen the scouting videos.  Isn't it WAY too early to tell what this draft is going to have at the top?  Aren't there always players who emerge during the year?  No one has seen the freshmen in a college game yet (just starting to see them).

The one question I have is whether freshmen will deicide to stay an extra year due to the boom in salary cap expected for 2017-18.   Can someone please let me know if it is a reality that waiting the year will result in a substantially better rookie contract for top players?  Or am I concerned about nothing.

Yeah, forget what they could get for him.  The better question is what contending team has the $20 million of deadweight expiring contracts lying around so that the salaries could even work out.

Best idea I have is actually for the Celtics:  Lee, Zeller, and Young for Johnson.  But as not wel as Johnson has played, I'm not sure such a trade even makes sense, despite the deadweight being sent out.

Considering that rookie salaries are not tied to the salary cap, this is unlikely to be a consideration.  Given the potential for a work stoppage after the 2016-2017 season, it makes even less sense for kids to wait a year, since they might be drafted in 2017 and have no job for several months.

Yup. You answered your own question. Depending on how Lee's utility holds up, that is a trade that could conceivably make us better (conceivably.... probably not, though).

The only other, obviously very remote, possibilities I can come up with are (a) the Derrick Rose salary dump, or (b) something built around Nene + Martell Webster from the Wiz

Yeah, and the Wizards would still have to add salary to a NeNe-Webster trade, because Johnson makes so freaking much.  I'd guess Dujuan Blair.

It's difficult to see Johnson getting traded this year, and certainly the low number of potential buyers will really hurt whatever return the Nets can get.

Since when has that ever stopped us from speculating? ;)

To put things in perspective, I found a mock from 11/13/14 for the 2015 draft. Yeah, it's Bleacher Report, but it's close enough. Here's how they looked:

1) Mudiay
2) Okafor
3) Towns
4) Cliff Alexander
5) Stanley Johnson
6) Porzingis
7) Oubre
8) Hezonja
9) Portis
10) Caris Lavert

So for the top 10, they did an okay job, missing big on Alexander and Lavert (injury) and missing "medium" on Mudiay, Oubre and Portis. Every one of those represents a situation where they rated the player higher than he ended up.

But there were some big misses at the top. They had Willie Cauley-Stein at 12 (He went 6.). They actually had us picking Justise Winslow at #12. Ouch, that's painful. So MJ, how's Kaminsky doing? Amida Brimah at #13, Kevon Looney at 14. D'Angelo Russell? Not even in the first round.

So they got most of the top of the draft right or within a few spots of where they ended up. Their #1 ended up going 7th, #4 didn't go at all and they didn't even put the eventual #2 in the first round. In other words, out of the five players who even went top-5, they only had two of them listed pre-season as top-5. Same thing for the next five: they only got two of the players that went from 6-10 (I'll give them Porzingis.).

So while it's never too early to start guessing who is going to be at the top, it may be a bit early to do so accurately

The Nets will finish with the worst record and the Celtics will end up with the 4th pick.

I would cry! All that WITHOUT being forced to tank? You can say we tanked 1 season but even then, we may have won more if we didn't have to play RR to see how he would do to be put on the block.

So MJ, how's Kaminsky doing?

9 minutes a game.  41% from the field.  3.1 points and 1 rebound per game.
