Too harsh.  It wasn't intentional.

1 game, that's fair.

I'm just not sure if it was intentional or not.

Some of the comments on here are just ridiculous lol  ::) Soft, soft, soft.

I lean towards it not being purposeful, but I very well could be wrong. But obviously the NBA is unsure of its purposefulness, too, because they would've suspended him for multiple games if they were convinced it was purposeful with as bad as it looked. I would imagine it would've been a 3 game suspension if they were convinced he wound up and tried to hit him in the groin like that.

Though I lean towards thinking he didn't purposefully do that, I understand why the NBA had to suspend him at least 1 game due to the nature of the incident. Hopefully we can still get a win tomorrow without him.

He is physical and aggresive on defense. Tries to use his body, hands, and smarts to make it happen and survive in the NBA. He is coming off a screen. His right hand is locked (yet some kept arguing he shoved Baynes too) and tries to sneakily come out of it with something. Both hands move forward, his right hand intented for some body contact but in the end Bonner gets it. Looked uglier than it should.

It's better having fan bias over your favourite team than other biases. Are you still mad for him pushing that heckler back in college or for any other specific reason ?

havent seen the game yet - which is required to judge the situation correctly

but....

1. Smart is an athlete - if he is punching you intentionally you will hit the deck

Nobody said that he was trying to throw a full force punch.  He gave him a quick smack to the D.  It wasn't meant to drop him.  But it was intentional.
Before a game on Christmas against the Pacers, Bird told Chuck Person that he had a present for him. During the game, Bird shot a 3-pointer in front of Person. Immediately after releasing the ball, Bird said to Person, "Merry F!#*ing Christmas!" and then the shot went in.

Much ado about nothing. Really disappointed with the leap to condemnation that Grande and Max took. The "windup" was clearly a matter of his arm getting hung up on previous Spur. Seems like he was just trying to swim past Bonner and the aim was a few inches off. No big deal. Amazed at how this incident has served society as a launching pad for a zillion puns. Right on the heels of "Deflategate", too -- we're becoming Idiocracy hundreds of years ahead of schedule.

Anyway, this has upside for Marcus. He's gone from Tony Allen comparisons to being compared to Dwyane Wade and Ron Artest. I said months ago that a SG version of Ron Artest would be a great destiny for him if he didn't turn out to be contender-level starting PG material. He's right on schedule. Just gotta make sure he never does anything banworthy. That's it. Otherwise, go forth and be Boston's Combo Guard Ron Artest. Or a blend between loopy Tony Allen and dirty D-Wade. Any of those things would be a prime ingredient for a championship.

I missed the game and 1st I had heard about this was when I came here the next day. i watched the video with the sound off and actually thought they played either the wrong video or were showing what happened on a previous play that maybe caused Smart to do this "heinous act". so i had no outside influence to sway me one way or the other and it took a few views to see anything possibly wrong and it still doesn't look intentional to me.

my guess is it wasn't and smart is a classy guy and the NBA only gave 'em 1 game because even they can't tell.

ok watched it again. i'll say this, I have no problem even if it was intentional. bonner was getting ready to set an illegal pick by raising his arms. I look at this as the equivalent of kicking your foot out when taking a jump-shot if a guy is constantly reaching in and not getting called.

I like Smart even more now.

keep your arms down like your supposed to when you're setting a pick and you won't get hit in the ding-dong

Agreed.

Other teams need to stop looking at the Celts as a bunch of sissies (for a lack of a more descriptive term.)

Good for Smart.

Not troubled by this at all.  Marcus Smart is one tough dude, plays physical, only a rookie yet playing like a veteran. Great pick by Danny and a player that will part of the nucleus of this team for a long time.

How many games? The same amount Dwayne Wade would get. 0
The Nets will finish with the worst record and the Celtics will end up with the 4th pick.

This is exactly what I thought, too. If they thought it was truly intentional and as bad as everyone here is making it to be, then he'd be gone for like three games.

duhwane wade is almost as untouchable as the messiah.

Smart should've taken out his frustration on him.  Bonner wasn't out trying to injure his playmate.

I think Smart gets a 1 game suspension....If any.

no he(bonner) probably wasn't but as soon as you raise your arms when setting a pick it should be an automatic technical foul.

The suspension ultimately cost us this game.
