havent seen the game yet - which is required to judge the situation correctly
but....
1. Smart is an athlete - if he is punching you intentionally you will hit the deck
2. yeah it looked kinda funny but in the video however it was within the natural motion sequence.. no visible punch swing - no change of rhytem -- so it might really have been unintentional
3. if it was intentional he will never commit it - he wouldnt only hurt himself but also weaken his team by getting suspended for n games
4. if that had been a soccer game - Bonner would have been suspended as well as he mad an headbutt motion (9 of 10 NBA/soccer players would have gone down like hit by lightning and 5 of 10 would be nominated for a oskar for their act)
5. Smart is a smart player from what I can tell - he uses all the tools avalible on D (including some not so clean stuff and he gets away with a lot of it) so why should he punch someone if there are so many other ways to hurt a opponent intentionlly without the risk of punishment (just trip the guy, poke him in the eye going after the rebound, move under the guy when he is in the air so he goes down hard). You really dont have to punch someone and he does know that.
I gotta admit that I have a history of fights (long past) - broken hand bones, cuts on the knuckles and so on.... nuthing to be proud about, but I think after watching the game I can tell if it was intentionally or not. If he did do it intentionally he has to be charged and hopefully he learns his lesson (whatever this lesson is -- not losing his head/smarter selection of dirty moves).
Yes, I rather see a fair game but if some minor dirty tricks help you to win a playoff game for instance I say go for it Smart. He wouldnt be the first and not the last guy. KG is/was using all tools getting into opponents heads, Malone passed into his opponents back on the inbound so the ball came right back to him for the easy layup. Kemp had a bad reputation too.... all those guys used all the tricks to win and all were stars. I'm sure I miss a lot of dirty players as I wasnt into basketball that much prior to the last 7 years and even now I only watch the Celtics games.
