Olynyk will need to earn his time back. Hump, Bass, Fav and Sully have been playing well collectively and individually which has led to team success.

You don't hand back playing time to a rookie that was playing in an underwhelming manner before he got hurt simply because he is returning. Long term, its probably in Olynyk's best interest to have to compete and beat out someone else for the playing time than to just be given that playing time.

If he's as good as some of KO's fans think he is, this can only be a good thing and will make him better overall. Let's not hurt his long term development simply because some fan boys think he should be getting the time right away, without earning it. Make him earn it, it will toughen him up and set the right overall tone in the locker room.

Exactly! I don't get how KO became a shoe in as a starter...right now he's not.

Well, Fav seems to be dropping out of the rotation on his own and Hump is banged up as well.  I think it's likely that Klynyk will see some minutes once he returns.  Not because we "fan boys" want him to get handed something he doesn't deserve, but because the team needs him.

I don't think Coach Stevens plays guys who don't 'earn' it.  He must be doing something right to take away minutes from the likes of Humphries, Faverani, etc.

I'm not really worried about him at all other than the fact that he's been hurt for a while now. Most rookies take some time to get their shot together, and other than the shooting he was getting into the right positions and reading the game well.

As for playing time, I trust Stevens to make the right decision and I'll leave it at that.

Kelly was definitely being careful of the ankle and seemed to have lost some mojo  after being out ,  but glade to see him back. Playing against Wiley old  vets like Stat  will sharpen his game quicker than anything.

Yup. Only a rookie but doesnt turnover the ball. Oly is at the same pace/eff sullinger played last year and look at him now. He will get better. Right now he is happy to help the team then everything else comes 2nd

You're right, but he had his mojo for at least one play: the play he made a block from behind and ended up on the floor on the baseline. That play showed some confidence in his ankle.

well, well, well...this is an interesting board. how many threads did we have to put to sleep over the past few years that moaned about doc, and therefore the celtics team, never played rookies? ;D

now, stevens shouldn't play rookies just because vets are looking good.

in this case, i think olly should play since he is the future and the more he plays the faster he develops. i find it harder to argue that a lack of playing time will benefit olly's development.

olly's stats per 36 are:
11.9 points
8.7 rebounds
2.5 assists

humphries per 36 numbers are better over all, but not dramatically so. it is not as if using olly in place of humphries makes no basketball sense.

humphries per 36:
12.9 points
10.4 rebounds
1.5 assists

where olly is weak right now is shooting percentage. (though on FT he is 100% !!!) olly is a shooter, more time will help him develop just that much faster i think.

hump is gone next year. vitor's MADE to be a back up, a nice one by the way. this year is about progress and growth. olly is a big investment for the celtcs, the win-loss record doesnt matter in the long run, i think stevens should play him often and according to matchup, etc.

1. You never heard me lamenting rookies not getting playing time under Doc because the whole concept is a fallacy based in fiction. Doc played rookies but he did it the right way, he made them earn their time on the court.

2. A case can be made that giving young players time rather than making them beat out other players for playing time hinders the motivational end of a players development curtailing their need to bring it play in and play out every play of a game. If you cruise because you are tired or just not into playing that night but know tomorrow you will just get your minutes, that fosters complacency and a lack of killer instinct.

3. So I could care less who someone thinks is the future of the team and who isn't. Cases can be made that Bass and Lee are on very affordable contracts and will be around a while as they bring to a role, exactly what is needed from great role players, which every team needs. And they do it at an affordable price. Also, given Danny's penchant to trade, there's no guarantee KO will be on this team any longer than any other player. He's traded players chosen as 1st rounders very quickly before and will do so again so KO could be just as much on the way out the door as Humphries, Wallace, Lee, Bradley or anyone else.

4. So you play the players who are playing the best and that keeps the vets and the rookies in the locker room happy and performing to their peak. Giving players time is just, IMHO, counterproductive.

actually, as i often do, i agree with your points above.

my point was more restricted. given olly's numbers and performance, playing time has clearly been earned, and, i do not see any evidence to date that clearly demonstrates that benching him improves him.

simple. and to disagreement is not a problem given the subjective nature of the beliefs.
