TRADE

Boston sends: Tiago Splitter, Lance Stephenson

Miami Sends: Gordon Hayward, Darrell Arthur

I'm not sure why Boston would do this.

Because Hayward is an upgrade over Stephenson in the starting lineup, at the cost of a backup big?

Indeed sir. Tiago Splitter: good player, I wasn't really sold on him anymore on being able to play the 4. Needed a good backup 4 (Denver thought enough of Arthur to move Kosta Koufos to Memphis to get him). But to a larger part, I've thought for a really long time that my biggest weakness was my wings. Gallo's out for a month or two to start the season, I needed more proven production out of my 2 and 3.

Hayward is probably the 2nd or 3rd most promising 2 guard in the league, behind Harden and depending on your preference and feelings about small sample sizes, Beal. He shot 44% from 3 after the all-star break, he was the Jazz's most efficient starter, and he's only going to get better next season. Plus he can play the 2 or 3 if need be. He's a gifted passer and a good defender (limited both 2s and 3s to below average production, while putting in above average numbers himself).

Mademy team much more dangerous offensively, playing more to Kyrie's strengths, and probably helped me defensively by giving me a viable stopper at the 4 in Arthur.

It's interesting, a lot of analysis of Arthur calls him an elite defender, but the numbers don't really show that.  He ranked 342nd in points allowed per possession, which is really bad (especially when a lot of the guys he's defending aren't taking three pointers).  His opponents' PER wasn't anything special (with opponents outscoring and outrebounding Arthur, and shooting an eFG% of .510 against him at PF).  His "defensive rating" is okay, but that can be largely a by-product of playing on a very good defense.

So, what gives?  Is the reputation undeserved, or is something causing the numbers to skew?

His team defense is very good. Very quick with size and length. Active player.

His man to man defense is dodgy ... especially against big man with legitimate size at the PF position. Can get out-muscled fairly easily. Guys like Z-Bo or Pau Gasol would tear D.Arthur apart. Most effective in man-to-man matchups against perimeter based PFs or PFs who rely on their quickness.

Obviously that leaves him quite vulnerable on switches against bigger opponents at the C position but also means he is well-equipped in switches against perimeter players (SF, SG, PG). Best used alongside a shot-blocking center preferably with bulk.

Not strong enough as a defender (or rebounder) to be a starting caliber player but useful as a backup PF especially when matching up against quicker lineups + floor stretching bigs. Keeps that size/length on the floor. His defensive quickness allows his team to stay big against small quick lineups.

Definitely not an elite defender but he is a plus on the defensive end when used correctly as a backup PF. Can become a liability if used incorrectly.

Thoughts on the new starting line up?

Tony Parker
Lance Stephenson
Chandler Parsons
Chris Bosh
Tiago Splitter

Is it Bosh/Seraphin and Splitter/Dalembert as the bigs?

Sorry I missed this Lucky. Yes it is with Dalembert getting most of the back up big minutes next to both Bosh and Splitter.

Rondo is not a MVP caliber player.

Disagree. Where's BballTim?!

Off the top of my head I'd say these are the only MVP caliber players

LeBron
Durant
Kobe
Paul
Parker
Melo
Dwight

Maybe even Rose and Westbrook.

Kyrie could make a run at it as easily as Kobe, Melo, Dwight, or Westbrook. He needs a 50+ win team and 75 healthy games,

By that logic so could his teammate Bynum.

Not, that's incorrect. Andrew Bynum is never a MVP candidate.

Because he's always injured and has never been the man on a 50 win team. Sounds a little like...

I'm sorry, I'd like to keep this discussion going, but there appear to be some billy goats walking over my bridge.
