Around the MLE, makes sense.

I wonder what the heck OJ Mayo was demanding, I assume it had to have been around the 8-9 million mark that we gave Jeff Green.

Well, considering Mayo took half that to play for Dallas, I'm guessing Mayo just really didn't want to play here.  Mayo will likely be starting in Dallas.  Here, he'd be just another guy.

If there one thing Mayo has proven in his basketball life, it's that he could care less about what team he plays for.

His agent, and most reports, say that he took less from Dallas than he would have been able to receive from Phoenix.

I wonder how you came to your conclusion.
He took less on a one year deal with a player option.

Essentially the long term contract (Phoenix's offer) was too small for his liking on a per year basis. So he's taking a short term option to try and play his way to a bigger deal.

I came to my conclusion because since he weaseled his way to USC, he has shown that he doesn't care about winning, team, or even competing.  He just wants what is best for him, which is clearly starting in Dallas.

So that means he does care which team he plays for.  He just doesn't have the same standards that you do.

If he didn't care, he'd be starting in Phoenix and making more money.

has anyone done the math yet to see if we have enough room to use the Bi-Annual without going into tax land (which we can't because we used the MLE)?

Read my post above, he wants more money long term than the Suns were going to give.

Besides he clearly cares where he plays, he wants to be "A Star!" wherever that is.

Not a bad move, if so.  I just don't really understand the animosity towards Mayo on this board.  So what he didn't want to join the Celtics?  Free agents have free will to make decisions.  Our roster will be fine without him.  He'll be fine without us.  And we signed Courtney Lee.

Happy times, I say.

Assuming that his salary is around 4.75 million (standard 7.5% raises gets you to around 21 million) we should.

We don't like "bad" players. (bad players relative to their hype/salary)

Mo Williams used to be that guy, OJ Mayo hopes to be as good as Mo Williams was back then. (and paid like it too!)

I agree with that.  He does care where he plays.  Players make decisions for all sorts of reasons: money, role, proximity to family, market, etc...

I think he's happy with his decision and we should be happy wth Courtney Lee.

Happy times.

The Cs replaced Ray Allen's 2012 $10 salary with Lee and JET making around $10m combined.  They replaced KG's $20m salary with KG's new deal and Jeff Green's.  There's no dead weight on the payroll (JO, Sheed and Shaq's money).  They've gotten a ton more depth for their buck.

Amen!

That's fine and all, but OJ Mayo isn't the only "bad" player in the league.  And he's never played a minute for the Celtics.

I just think we all should move on from Mayo-Gate.  Didn't we just acquire Courtney Lee?

We'll have a contender and not pay a dime in luxury tax.  Very well done, Danny.

I've pretty much done it.  We have room for the BAE if that's our last player.  It's unclear exactly how much Lee signed for this year, but I'm assuming $5.29 million.  It's also unclear on Bass's first year, which I've decided is $6.33 million, and Green hasn't signed, but was reported as having agreed to a $9 million first year.

That puts us at $70.8 mil, and gives us $3.5 million left to spend.  We can't even afford three 10-year vets at the minimum.  Accordingly, I highly doubt we use the BAE, and bet we pick up someone from summer league, or bring back more if allowable, to use one of the spots.  That would leave us around $2.7 mil for the last two roster spots, which could be 10-year vets.

Below is my current estimate of where we're at.  Note: Kris Joseph is assumed as making the roster.  Also, his cap hit, due to the MLE rules, is equal to the min for a 2-year vet, even tho he'd be making the rookie minimum.

16790345   Pierce
11000000   Rondo
11000000   Garnett
9000000   Green
5000000   Terry
6333333   Bass
1630800   Bradley
1306920   Sullinger
1254720   Melo
1352181   Wilcox
854389   Joseph
5288335   Lee

70811023   Total

I think we as board should feel free to keep talking about whatever we want to as it relates to the NBA.

I mentioned it in relation to Mayo's FA demands, Lee was asking for a tier of money below so it provided a band with which to judge things.

Lee won't be making over 5 million in the first year. Hollinger said it was around 4.6 which fits with the standard 7.5% raises for the total value of the contract.
